NGARUAWAHIA R.C.’S ANNUAL MEETING.

The annual race meeting of the Ngaruawahia Club eventuated on Saturday last in beautifully fine weather. The special train which left Auckland carried a large number of sportsmen, and, together with a good muster from the surrounding districts, the attendance, when racing commenced, was well up to the average. The fields were particularly good and the racing interesting, although the finishes would in many instances have been closer had the starts been more even. Betting was confined to the bookmakers, of whom 16 paid £4 each to call the odds.

The gathering was well carried out. and, taken all round, was an undoubted success, and credit must be given to the secretary (Mr. E. Rathbone), who saw that everything was done to make the outing an enjoyable one. Mr. H. Waring occupied the judge’s box, and his position was an easy one to fill. The opening event, the Hurdles, saw three runners, and of these Kaiwhaka was at once made a hot favourite. However, the market underwent a change, and money coming in for Whatashot, he supplanted Kaiwhaka and had a slight call in his favour. The issue was soon placed all doubt, as Kaiwhaka, going to the front at the start, had his two opponents well beaten a long way from home, and he won by three lengths from Jill. Whatashot fell at the second fence from home, but he was then last, and making heavy weather of it-

A field of seven contested the Maiden Plate, and of the number Arawa, a three-quarter brother to Mighty Atom, in C. Coleman’s stable, was early supported, and a short price was soon on offer about his chance. Then coin came for Blue Rocket, with the result that there was little to choose between the pair at the close of betting. Miss Ada was at a fairly good price- When sent on the journey Whittaker rushed Arawa to the front, and the little fellow soon had a big break on his opponents and at the head of the straight it looked as though he could not lose. In the run down the straight Greenwood brought Miss Ada along with a good run, and, rapidly overhauling the tiring Arawa. she just got up in time to win by a head. Report was a length and ahalf away third, and the rest beaten off.

The Cup attracted seven runners, and of these Waiotahi was the most fancied. When the field jumped off Caruso was the first to show out, and Whittaker, keeping him moving, never left the issue in doubt, winning all the wav and passing the post a length in front of Waiotahi, with Fraulein a good third. Backers asked for nothing but Kanewara in the Publicans’ Handicap, and he went out an odds-on favourite. He was in front at the start and never headed, winning easily from M’ss Lavonia, with Maika a fair third. Lady Dot was a starter, but was never in it at the end.

The Maiden Trot saw eight horses comnete. The connections of Nimrod thought their horse a moral, and executed a fair-sized commission. Royal Mail was then made the medium of strong support, and every shade of odds being eagerly snapped up, he eventually started a hot favourite. The race was a farce to watch. Royal Mail was in front very quickly, and cleared right away, the verdict being won by a quarter of a mile. Nimrod defeated the rest of the runners almost as easily as Royal Mail had beaten him. The Patronius mare Patricia, who has let her connections down badly before, was backed as if the Hack Handicap was all over. She again left her admirers lamenting, as she cou’d onlv run a poor third, the winner turning up in Miss Wairiki, by Wairiki —'Miss Drury, who hails from C- Coleman’s stable. Dick, upon whom a few stray sovereigns were invested, ran a good race, and was beaten a length and a-half, but was finishing the stronger. It was whispered that Dick was an assumed name for the animal, and second money was consequently impounded. After his Cup victory Caruso was sent out favourite for the Waingaro Handicap, but this time Waiotahi reversed the positions, except that Caruso failed to run into a place. Miss Lavonia ran a good race, and

was a creditable second, and Fraulein third.

Despite her poor showing in the Publicans’, Lady Dot was the only one backed in the Flying Handicap, and she ’ fairly bolted in after being in front all the way. Frontino ran well and easily disposed of the others. The results are as follows: — HURDLES HANDICAP of 15sovs. One mile and a-half. J. Kevelle’s b g Kaiwhaka, by St. Clements, 9.9 (Roche) 1 R.
