AUCKLAND TROTTING CLUB’S SPRING MEETING.

FIRST DAY ON SATURDAY. Next Saturday will see the opening of the trotting season in Auckland, as on that day the Auckland Trotting Club will inaugurate their spring gathering at Alexandra Park. The reducing of the limits and the classification of saddle and harness horses is a step which should result in better racing, and the club is to be congratulated on its efforts to provide the public with the very best sport possible- The secretary (Mr. C. F. Mark) is one of those gentlemen who studies his patrons one and all, and those who journey to the Park on Saturday, to assist at the gathering can rely upon everything being done to ensure a good day’s outing. The acceptances are exceedingly good, and it would appear as though fine weather only is necessary to ensure a successful meeting. Racing will commence with the Maiden, and with 14 horses engaged, most of an unknown quantity, backers will probably be found holding off. Hamapuku may be a fair horse, as he has been paid up for in the Middle-class Trot.

Twelve horses figure in the Trotting Handicap, included in the number being Receiver and Bert. Robex is a good horse, but he is asked to give away a big start. The Spring Handicap has some good performers in the list, and if Viscount, John Harold and Sweet Patch start there is material for a fine race.

The Onehunga Handicap for ponies looks very open. Fraulein has not won a race for some time, but her running at Ngaruawahia suggests that she will not be long in getting on the winning list. Frontino and Mistime are a couple of good ponies. In the Stewards’ Trot Manxman is scratch, with Black Diamond on the Isec. mark. Fiery Cross ran well at the summer meeting.

Some good horses are included In the list in the Middle-class Trot-,

amongst the number being Santa Claus and Phyllistina. Only six are engaged in the October. Handicap, but nevertheless the event is very open. Maplewood is set to give V.S. 2sec., and the tussle between the pair should be a good one. The meeting will conclude with the Electric Handicap, in which event Goldwood is on 9sec- and Belle Gray on scratch.
