DECIDED ON SATURDAY NEXTThe principal event of the year run under the auspices of the V.A.T-C., the Caulfield Cup, comes up for decision on Saturday. Years ago the interest in the Caulfield Cup taken by New Zealanders was very keen, and vast crowds would be anxiously awaiting the result. Nowadays the interest is not nearly so great, and very little is known of the horses unless they be the top weights or representatives of the Dominion. With Master Soult figuring at the head of this year’s race, followed by another exNew Zealander in Aborigine—the latter dead-heated with Blue Book last year—the result will he anxiously awaited by sportsmen on this side. Artillerie won the Caulfield Stakes on Saturday, and though she broke up badly in the concluding stages last year, when she started favourite, she may prove that her form on that occasion was all wrong. Annapolis is also an Auckland-bred horse, and a victory on his part would be pleasing to Aucklanders. Flavonius is showing good form, and he is said to have been very unlucky in not placing the Epsom Handicap to his credit. Eric was responsible for a sterling performance in the Metropolitan Handicap, and he and Flavanius will perhaps be the hardest for the New Zealanders to beat. The acceptances are: —
