HIS MAJESTY’S.

THE “ALADDIN” SEASON CLOSED. Mr. J. C. Williamson s “ Aladdin” Pantomime Company had a great finish up at His Majesty’s on Saturday, the house being again crowded in every part. The season thus fairly established a new record, hundreds being turned away at each of the six-

teen performances- The enthusiasm was maintained unimpaired, and -all •; the leading members of the company, including Price and Revest, the famous acrobats, were called before the curtain at ’ the - close of Saturday night’s performance. A number of . bouquets were handed up, and theprincipals were cheered again and again. The pantomime people were ; simply delighted with the reception given to them by the Auckland people. On leaving by train on Sunday they ‘; were ferewelled by a large crowd of ;. people, hundreds travelling by train . to see them away by the Rarawa from Onehunga, where the wharf was crowded, and hearty cheers being given as the steamer cast off. The’ “ Aladdin” company appeared at New Plymouth on Monday, were at - Wanganui on Tuesday and last even-, tag, and visit Palmerston North for -to-night and to-morrow; they are at 'Hastings on Saturday, at’ Napier, on

Monday and Tuesday, at Mastertpn on Wednesday, and thence open; in Wellington on Thursday, September Ist, where they play for a fortnight-

THE. CALVE CONCERTS.

AUCKLAND SEASON OPENED LAST EVENING. ■- The first of the' three concerts which are being given ,by Madame Calve, in conjunction with Signor Gasparri and M. Jacques Pintel, took place at His Majesty’s last eveiling in the presence of a highly enthusiastic yet withal very critical audience, the concert being admittedly one of the greatest successes yet achieved locally. Going to press before the programme concluded, we are unable to notice the performance at any length. Madame’s programmed numbers were: Stances —(a) O ma lyre immortelle (Sappho), Gounod; (b) “The Habanera” (“Carmen”), Liszt; and “ The Jewel Song” from “Faust” (Gounod). - Madame also took part with Signor Gasparri —in the duo, “Cavalleria Rusticana” (Mascagni), and was vociferously encored in. that, as in each of her numbers. Signdr

Gasparri’s selections were Romanza—- “ Non t’amo piu” (Tosti); recit. and arioso, “Reciter mentre preso” (Pagliacci), Leoncavello; and Romanza—- “ Cielo e mar” (Heayen and Ocean), (La Giaconda), Poncliielli.. M. Jacques Pintel, besides playing the accompaniments, gave three pianoforte solos: —Chopin’s Ballade A flat, Liszt’s Rhapsodie No- 8 and Polonaise (Liszt). -

CALVE’S SYDNEY FAREWELL-

The Sydney ‘ ‘ Town and Country Journal,” speaking of the Calve concerts, says:—August 15 was Mme. Calye’s birthday, and at her farewell concert In the Town Hall in the evening the distinguished singer was in high spirits and most perfect voice. As she faced the large audience, numbering about 3000, the enthusiasm was

very great, and the famous singer was recalled again and again. Her wonderful dramatic power was displayed in the Salome aria from Massenet’s “ Herodiade,” and bracketed with it was the charming “Au Printemps,” which was sung with buoyant lightness; and, in response to the applause, ■“ L’Appel du Berger” was given- Still the audience clamoured for more, and Mme- Calve then sang “ Cornin’ Thro’ the Rye.” The “Carmen” duet was interpreted with remarkable spirit by Mme. Calve and Signor Gasparri, the diva especially singing the love music with amorous significance. By special request, the Jewel Song from “ Faust” was not alone sung, but acted, by Mme. Calve, whose expressive face and the fact that every syVable could be heard made the “ King of Thule” ballad particularly interesting. The encore was “ The Habanera,” which was sung as only Calve can sing it- iSignor Galileo Gasparri sang Mascagni’s “ Serenata” and the “ O Primavera,” and as an- encore •“ La, Donne e Mobile.” M. Jaques Pintel (who acted as accompanist) p’ayed as charmingly as ever,, and with that wonderful ease which has made him so: popular.
