The following cablegram has been sent to the Duke of Portland: —“The people of Auckland want Carbine to die in the land of his birth. Will you sell?’’ The scheme is backed by an enthusiast here, who is prepared to contribute £lOOO. The idea is to have the celebrated thoroughbred placed on exhibition during his lifetime, and when dead placed in the museum. * * * • The annual meeting of the Wairarapa Racing Club was held at Greytown last week, Mr. W- G. Bidwill being in the chair. The report and bal-ance-sheet, as printed, were adopted, and £4OOO was allocated to the stewards for stakes. The whole of the officers were re-elected, except the veterinary surgeon, who has left the district.
