HIS FOOT IN IT.
A Liverpool magnate recently gave a large dinner-party to celebrate the engagement of his 'daughter, . who,-
it must be confessed was no longer young.
At dessert a bottle of Chambertin ceremoniously reclining in a basket was brought in. “My dear friends” said the host, “I commend this wine to your notice; it dates from my daughter’s birth.” The gentleman to whom the daughter had become engaged raised his glass to his lips. “What excellent wine!” he exclaimed. “What an aroma! It must be very old!” The engagement was terminated that evening.
