LICENSING COMMITTEE MEETINGS.

AUCKLAND. The annual meeting of the Auckland Licensing Committee was held on Tuesday, at the Police Court. Mr. E. C. Cutten, S.M-, presided, and there were also present on the Bench Messrs. L. J. Bagnall, J. J. Holland, J. M. Mennie, and Dr. King. The police reports were generally favourable to the licensees, and indicated that the hotels of Auckland were well-appointed, and well conducted. All applications for renewal of licenses, both wholesale and retail, were granted, a s were also a license to retail New Zealand wines and a number of packet licenses. TRANSFERS. The following transfers of licenses were granted:—Carpenters’ Arms, George Hyde, to Nigel Honiss; Star, Albert Street, Horace Samuel Elliott to George Hyde; Waitemata, John Endean to John Albert Endean; Rising Sun, Albert Beaumont Buckland to Henry Percival Smith; Wynyard Arms, R. J. Ware to Henry Arthur Lloyd; Freeman’s, F. E. Hunt to James Thomas Grey; Queen’s," J. Montgomery to George H. Foster. A FUTILE APPLICATION. Charles George Taylor applied for a publican’s license for the Fitzroy Hotel, which was one of the hotels closed after the last no-license poll. Mr- Earl, who appeared for the applicant, said the license had been previously refused by the committee, but he held that the refusal was illegal. He made the application again in order

to keep the matter alive until such time as the legality of the committee’s action could be tested in the Supreme Court. The President: The application is again refused. Mr. Earl: Will the committee favour me with some reason tor refusing? The. President: On the same • grounds as it was refused last time. The committee does not see its way to increase the number of licenses. AURORA HOTEL. The police reported that the Aurora Hotel (Mr. Jas. Moiioyj was frequented by a rough class or men, who should not be served in a respectably-con-ducted hotel. ■ Mr. Nicholson, for the licensee, said the hotel was situated in what was admittedly not a very desirable local- ■ ity, and consequently the class of customers who frequented this hotel were not the best class. They were, however, entitled to get dnnk. The licensee had tried to conduct the house as best he could. Mr. Molloy, in giving evidence, denied that he served an undesirable class. There were a number of persons who loitered about the locality, but witness claimed he was not responsible for what took place outside his premises. The President said the committee took a serious view of the complaint, but had decided to grant the application for renewal until the next quarterly meeting. Meanwhile the police would keep a close supervision over the premises. If the report submitted at the next meeting was not satisfactory, the committee would take some action. WAVERLEY HOTEL. With reference to the Waver ley Hotel the sub-inspector reported that statements had been made by witnesses in the Police Court which went to show that this hotel was not conducted as well as it might be. As a consequence the hotel had been under rather stricter supervision during the last quarter than other hotels, and the police reports were satisfactory. Mr. Prendergast, who appeared for the licensee (Mr. M. O’Connor), said he was very surprised the sub-in-spector had made charges without calling evidence to support the charges. It was unfair to the licensee. It should be recognised that Mr. O’Connor had a very difficult trade to cater for, in that the Waverley Hotel was the last ‘■'port of call” for sailors and firemen returning to their ships after a night out in town. The renewal was granted. NEWTON HOTELS. Mr. J. R. Reed made application on ; behalf of the licensee of the Caledonian Hotel, Karangahape Road, for permission to extinguish the lamp outside the public entrance at 10 o’clock, on the ground that a 2,0i»0-candle power light had been erected across the roadand there was no need for the hotel light. Similar applications were also made in respect of the Family and Naval, Rising Sun, and Star Hotels, all of which are situate on Karangahape Road. The committee decided to grant the applications for three months. PARNELL. The annual meeting of the Parnell Licensing Committee was held yesterday afternoon, there being present Messrs. E. C. Cutten, S.M., (chairman), G. W. Basley, W- Thomas, I. Heale, and W. Gavin. The transfer of the Windsor Castle Hotel (Parnell) from Selim Ferdinand Hedlund to William Ibbotson was granted. Renewals of licenses were granted to Thomas McHaigh (Ellerslie Hotel), Frederick Tomlinson (Exchange), Edward Y. Buller (Newmarket), and Peter Farquhar (Royal George), and licenses granted to Herbert P. Littlewood (Alexandra), Edward Blair (Carlton Club), Nora Macdonald (Panmure), and William Ibbotson (Windsor Castle). The police raised no objection to any of the above applications, but raised certain objections to the issue of a license to Mary Syms for the Captain Cook Hotel, Khyber Pass, but Mr. Earl, who appeared for Mrs. Syms,. brought rebutting evidence to the allegations MANUKAUThe annual meeting of the Manukau Licensing Committee was held at the Courthouse, Onehunga, on Tuesday,

made, and the committee, after con? ferring, decided to grant the license, when Mr. E. C. Cutten, 5.M.,. presided, while in addition Messrs. D. Hattaway, J. Flanagan, W. Westney, G. H. Fleming, and Dr. W. G. Scott were on the Bench. Sergeant M. Rogers represented the police. Renewals of licenses were granted to J. R. D’. Baker, Hibernian Hotel, Onehunga; Alfred Underwood, Criterion Hotel, Otahuhu; Michael Barry, Railway Terminus Hotel, Onehunga; Edward Keating, Exchange Hotel, Onehunga; W. J. Brewin, Manukau Hotel, Onehunga; Geo. Foley, Prince Alfred Hotel, Onefiunga;. J- J. Russell, Star Hofei, Otahuhu; Harriet Dingle, Railway Hotel, Drury; J. E. Hunt, Globe Hotel, Papakura; A. G. Bennett, Marine Hotel, Howick. The application of Wm. Parkinson for a renewal of the license of the Papakura Hotel was opposed by the police, on the ground that the licensee had permitted drunkenness. It was resolved that Constable Lanigan should send in a special report on this hotel to the next quarterly meeting. An application from Mrs. E. Wright for a license for the Harp of Erin Hotel, Ellerslie, was refused, the chairman remarking that the application was evidently made for technical reasons.

WAIKATO. The annual meeting of the Waikato Licensing Committee was held. Mr. F. O’B. Loughnan, S.M., presided, and other members present were: Messrs. C. Day, W. Dey, and G. Edgecumbe. Applications for licenses were granted as follows:—G- Inglis, Ohaupo Hotel (Ohaupo); M. Ryan, Delta Hotel (Ngaruawahia); J. W. Smith, Alpha Hotel (Kihikihi) ; J. W. N. Bright, Waikato Hotel (Hamilton); E. J. Moriarity, Frankton Junction Hotel (Frankton). In the case of the lastnamed it was stated that complaints had been received from the Frankton Town Board and the police that the accommodation was insufficient for the travelling public. Mr. Gillies, who appeared for the owners, said that owing to the uncertainty of the local option poll they only had an 18-months’ term. A first-class house would otherwise have been erected. He promised to provide a substantial increase in the accommodation at once, and on the strength of this assurance the license was granted.

The following renewals were granted:—Star Hotel (Kihikihi), Huntly Hotel (Huntly), Waipa Hotel (Ngaruawahia), Commercial Hotel (Hamilton), Te Awamutu Hotel (Te Awaniutu), Hamilton Hotel (Hamilton), Royal Hotel (Hamilton), Harbour ■View Hotel (Raglan), Royal Hotel (Raglan), Taup.iri Hotel (Taupiri), Alexandra Hotel (Pirongia). In regard to the Commercial Hotel, at Te Awamutu, the Bench said that the proprietor and barman had recently been guilty of supplying liquor to intoxicated persons. It was stated that a transfer of the license was in progress, and the renewal -was "granted subject to a guarantee that the owner would nominate a suitable person a.s transferee.
