HAWKE’S BAY.

(From Our Own Correspondent?. NAPIER, March 28. Mr. G. P. Donnelly left here last Thursday morning for Wellington en route to Sydney. The Squire of Otatora is going for pleasure and expects to put in a month in the other colonies. Sleacombe, the latest addition to the hurdling brigade, is making firstclass progress in his exercises over the battens, the big gelding galloping over them in a confident manner, and judging his fences in a tradesmanlike style. Appin developed a splint last week and his trainer, W. Stone, reckons that it will have the effect of putting him out of commission for some time. Tinetoa, the Conqueror gelding who paid a big dividend in the Scurry Stakes at the Autumn gathering of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club last season, has been set going again, under the guidance of J. Griffiths, who trained and rode him when he returned the sensational dividend. Tinetoa is the property of Sandstream’s owner, Mr. J. Miller, of Waipawa. Milennial put in some good work over the battens at Napier Park last week, Apremont’s daughter is being educated by Arthur Lord. Anchor Head is one of the sick and sorry lot just now, he is suffering from an injury to one of his feet, the mishap occurred at the Tolago Bay meeting. The full brother to Mundic is more than a fair sort, and it is unfortunate that his owner is being deprived of his services. Merrimac, whom Mr. E. J. Watts acquired a couple of weeks back, is a nice cut of a youngster, greatly resembling his sire, Merriwee. Victoria Cross, who produced him, was bought by Mr. G. N. Pharazyn, a couple of years ago, Mr. Watts was so greatly taken with the look of the colt that he made an offer to secure him and matters coming his way the deal was effected. Merrimac is a rising two-year-old full brother to Winning Post, Pluck and Meritorious. Last Friday the Hon. J. D. Ormond shipped a contingent of thoroughbreds to Sydney by the Wimmera, the bunch consisted of Renown, and five coming two-year-olds by Birkenhead. The youngsters are, a full sister to Contendent, a filly out of Chant, a filly out of Lancelot, Humming Bird’s sister, and a gelding out of Montdread; and therefore a full brother to Dreadless and St. Aidan. The pack all show that they are in good hearty condition, and. when put up for. auction, as it is intended they will be when they reach Sydney,

they should certainly attract attention.

Next Friday J. McLaughlan is shipping Golden Mite to Sydney, this filly is by Gold Reef out of Kilmorey, and though only a pony, for she can easily go under the fourteen hand notch, has shown in her track work that she can gallop as fast as some of the larger proportioned equines. Mayflower is making good progress from the accident that she met with at the Napier Park meeting. Though her racing career is ended she should prove valuable as a brood mare. A. Wood has received a couple of strangers from Karamu, the new pupils are two brown geldings three-year-olds by Birkenhead out of Hippolyte and Agony. A. Raynor is taking Icel under his command, this half-brother to Convoy can jump some and it is intended to get him ready for the hurdle attractions 1 'that will later on come up for argument.. Mr. E. J. Watts is expected back in the Dominion from Sydney and Brisbane early next month and it is his intention to be present at the Autumn meeting of the Wellington Racing Club.
