CANTERBURY.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Tyrant, a grey gelding by the Government sire Tyranny, has been having an uninterrupted run of luck at country meetings this season. He won two races at Oxford last week, and is a likely candidate for big hurdle honours in the near future. Shillelagh, a son of Single-stick 11, won the Oxford Cup very comfortably and is just the sort or horse to do .well over hurdles. There has been some brisk betting over the double, Great Easter and Autumn, during the past few days. Penates, Kilindini and Broadsword are the favourite selection for the seven furlong race, while fngoda, Gold Lace and Osiris have caught the eye of backers for the mile and a-half event. The progeny of Stepniak had a great innings at Waimate last week. Cute won two events, Stepmaid, a full sister to Volodia, won the president’s Handicap and Constadt, the full brother to All Red and Munjeet, annexed the cup. St. Aidan; .who was tried at the hurdles last season but failed to dis-

tinguish himself, accounted for the last race, the Stewards’ Welter, at \vaimate. The big son of Birkenhead was looking very well, but he had to be shaken up to beat the moderate lot on animals opposed to him. Pronoun, who distinguished ‘ himself two seasons ago, by carrying off a decent race at the Wellington winter meeting is now running in thirdrate company at country meetings. He seems to be quite a back-number. Ringdove will not race again. This English-bred mare has shown some great performances on the track and has won a few. good handicaps, but she never once produced the form she showed in private. She will be mated with Boniform.

Taskmaster has gone amiss ana will not start at the C.J.C. Autumn meeting.

Full Sail left for Melbourne on Friday last. . . It ds stated that Equitas will not fulfil ’ her engagements at the forthcoming meeting at Riccarton, but will be seen out at Ellerslie. Penates one of the favourites for the Great Easter handicap, will be offered for sale by auction at Tattersails on March 30. A number of wellknown performers will' be sent into the. ring ,on the same date. Ther-South i Canterbury Jockey Club have- been very unfortunate lately with? its starteri . Applications were called recently for the position and thedubreceived sixteen applications; and: it was decided to appoint Mr. H. ; . . , . Broadsword is bowling along in great style, at present and with In* goda has been well in -doubles for the two great autumn events by many sports who' frequent Riccarton early in the. morning.

Miss M'.schief has-been turned out for a. lengthy spell. ’

Gravitation has-again broken flown, and : it .is not proposed, by his owner, to persevere with him. He will be offered for sale for stud purposes. ' Sir Tristram; Formby, Parula and Seleni have arrived, at Riccarton, and will ; carry the all cerise colours- at the C.J.C. Autumn meeting. 5 The Ashburton trainer C. Giesler, has J. C. N. Griggs’ two horses Outlander and r Gunboat looking in the best of Settle, and the pair are expected to run well , next- week-. Husbandman is doing good work on the'tracks and should run well in the Great Autumn handicap.. Tumut, Osiris ■ and Waipaku arrived from •» the North this : morning.

Federal .put. up a g?ood gallop over half a mile on the, sand this morning. This gelding is a veritable watchbreaker . in. private; but so far he has failed to win a big race .in good company.' ’ ' f
