WEST END ROWING CLUB.

The West End Rowing Club. held, a series of pair-oared trials on Saturday afternoon for trophies presented by Mr. W. Smith, twelve crews competing. Winners of the six preliminary heats were pairs stroked by Cato, G. Wright, Smith and Massey. The second round saw Rae, Cato and Smith left in the semi-final. Smith had a bye and Rae defeated Cato by a length and e-helf, thus leaving Smith and Rae in the final. The winners of the semi-final having rowed the course three times during the afternoon it was decided to postpone the final until Monday evening. The final was thus held on Monday and resulted in a win for Rae and Cox who beat Smith and Bell after an interesting race. Mr. J. Clark acted as starter and Mr. A. E. Carlaw, captain of the cub as judge, both gentlemen performing ther duties satisfactorily. Mr. E. Knight kindly placed his launch at the disposal of the club for starting purposes. The committee have d 'cided upon holding the president’s 4r. M. McLean) trophy trials on Saturday March 19. The dates for the remaining club fixtures for the season were arranged as follow:—Double sculling trials (Schmidt’s trophies), April 2, entries to close on March 26; trial fours (Kohn shield), April 9, entries to close on April 2.

Hagney has signified his willingness to row Pearce for the championship of Australia for any amount, on the Manawatu River, each, to pay his own expenses, the loser to receive £5O.
