AUCKLAND RACING CLUB'S SUMMER MEETING.

SECOND DAY’S RACING. A SURPRISE IN THE SUMMER CUP. Though by no means so many people present as there were on Boxing Day, the attendance at Ellerslie on Thursday must be considered satisfactory. As on the. opening day t the weather was all that could be desired, and the large fields, which in nearly every instance concluded with a close finish, provided a most enjoyable day’s outing. The racing was carried out without a hitch, and no fault could be found with the various officials of the club, who one and all filled their positions with credit. A choice programme of music was provided by the Auckland City Band, under the leadership of Bandmaster John West. Betting was brisk, the sum handled at the machines totalling £19,355, an increase of £2152 compared with Summer Cup day last year. The two days’ totalisator returns show an increase of £5201. Bookmakers to the number of 45 each paid £2O ifis to bet, and contributed to the club £922 10s, making, for the two days, £2050. THE RACING. The Bowen Handicap set the ball rolling, and a favourite was quickly found in Golden Loop, with Ambala next choice. When the barrier lifted Hauraki was badly left, while Ambala and Elegance were quickly out in front, and they made the running to the head of the straight, where Waiari and Golden Loop were well up next. Once in the straight Ambala shook off Elegance, and, holding off the opposition, she won comfortably by a length and a-half from Admiral Soult, who just defeated Waiari a head for second money. Sea Elf was almost on terms fourth, the last to finish being The Ponsonby Hurdles saw Tui Cakobau go out a strong favourite, the second choice being Leo. Sabre was soon out in front, and with Hautapu next, and the field well strung out, the

outsider carried on the running till the head of the straight, where Hautapu, Castadrift and Lady Patricia were all well up and Leo next. In the run to the last hurdle Lady Patricia took charge, and, safely negotiating the final obstacle, she came on and won all out by four lengths from Leo, who just got up in time to defeat Sabre a neck for second place. Hautapu was close up fourth. Castadrift fell at the last fence when holding a good chance of winning. The Visitors’ Handicap proved a good betting race, almost all of the candidates being well backed. The first to show out was Lady French, and she led the field, headed by Turbine, till well into the straight. Here the field closed up, and a great struggle to the post ensued. Salute, finishing gamely, just lasted long enough to win by half a head from the faster-finishing Gipsy Belle, with Miss Winnie three-quarters of a length further back third. The remainder were all in a bunch. Contendent was badly left. The principal event on the programme—the Summer Cup—saw the satisfactory field of 14 go to the post, and when betting ceased the bracketed pair, Muskerry and Maori King, carried most money, but individually backed, Elysian was favourite, the outsiders being Coromandel and Miss Mischief. A good start saw Roosevelt quickly out in front, followed by Maheno, Sir Artegal, Elysian and Miss Mischief. The order was the same till they neared the seven furlongs post, when Bennett rushed Miss Mischief to the front, and the daughter of Treadmill clapping on the pace, had an advantage of a couple of lengths over Sir Artegal at the five furlongs post, where Roosevelt, Maheno, Sedition and Ngapuka were most prominent. In the run through the cutting the light-weight increased her lead, and at the top stretch she had a commanding lead from Sir Artegal and Maheno, with Roosevelt and Ngapuka next, while Diabolo could be seen coming fast from the ruck. Galloping along i n good style Miss Mischief turned into the straight, and, holding off all opposition, she won by three-quarters of a length from Diabolo, who finished up well, and beat Maheno by half-a-length for second money. Roosevelt was fourth, followed by Sedition, Sir Artegal, Ngapuka, and Elysian in that order. Backers came strongly for Lady Medallist in the Alexandra Handicap, and she went out a very hot favourite. The history of the race is soon told, as the brown daughter of St. Alwynne was soon out in front, and the opposition never seriously threatened danger, Lady Medallist winning in a canter by two lengths from Wild West, who defeated Tanekaha half a head for second place. Devonport was only a head away next, with Woodhey last. Apelion and War Song were the only ones inquired for in the Criterion Handicap. When the journey commenced War Song was quickly out in front, but was soon joined by Goldfinder, and the pair ran together to the head of the straight, where War Song was having a little the best of it. A splendid race to the post ended in favour of Goldfinder by half-a-length from War Song, with Apelion, who came with a late run, a similar distance away third. Royal Scotland was sent out favourite, but despite the fact that Gray was in the saddle, he never looked like winning at any part of the race. Miss Advance was the first away when the barrier rose, while Dan Leno lost a couple of lengths. Clapping on the pace Muss Advance never left the issue in doubt, and remained in front from start to finish, winning by a length from Lan Leno, who beat Epsom Lass by half-a-length. Royal Scotland was fourth. In the final event, Swimming Belt carried almost double the amount of any of the other candidates. The favourite did not get away too well, but he soon ran into a good position, and when heads were turned for home he was within a couple of lengths of Uranium, who had been out in front from

the start. Although Jenkins rode Swimming Belt hard and the horse finished well, he had no chance with Uranium, who won by a length, with Aristocrat a couple of lengths away third. THIRD DAY. KILWINNING BRINGS OFF A SURPRISE. Fine weather again favoured the Club on Monday when the third day’s racing came up for decision. As on the two previous days the attendance was large and as the fields were large and the finishes close, good sport was provided. The officials one and all carried out their respective duties satisfactory and left no opening for complaint. Business was again brisk on the totalisator, Mr. Harry H. Hayr and staff handling investments totalling £25,614, an increase of £1994 over the previous New Year’s Day, and making £69,170 10s for the three days, as against £61,975 10s last year, an increase of £7,195. Fifty book-makers were licensed at £2O 10s each, returning £1,066 for the afternoon, and making £3,116 in fees for the three days concluded. THE RACING. The opening event saw the Hon. J. D. Ormond supply the favourite with Contendent, but he made a very poor showing and never looked like winning at any part of the journey. Lace Collar was the quickest away and she set out to make the pace followed by Madam Soult and Admiral Soult and so they ran till heads were turned for home, Lace Collar still had a little the best of it at the distance, but here Admiral Soult threw out a strong challenge and a great race to the box ended in his favour by half a head with Madam Soult a length and a-half behind Lace Collar in third place. Dunborve was selected as the most likely to score in the New Year’s Hurdles. As usual Hautapu was quickly out in front and with Castadrift and Leo following he carried on the running till half a-mile from home, when Castadrift took command and he turned into the straight two lengths out from Leo. This pair rose at the final fence simultaneously and a good race to the post saw Castadrift win by three quarters of a length. Dunborve who had been running in the rear most o p the way finished fast and was a length and a-half away in third place. Swagsman was fourth. In the Derby a favourite was found in Elysian. When the barrier rose Kilwinning, who could not pace it with his opponents in the Christmas Handicap, was soon out in front, and, clapping on the pace, he showed the way past the stand, followed by Elysian and Fleet Arrow. Entering the back, Maori King moved up, and at the six furlongs’ post he was running level with Fleet Arrow about two lengths behind Kilwinning, with Taskmaster next. Fleet Arrow then retired, and First Wairiki moved up a bit, but Kilwinning still had the best of it running through the cutting and across the top stretch. Kilwinning was still holding his own when they turned for home, and, stalling off a strong challenge from his stablemate, Taskmaster, he won by half-a-length, with Maori King two lengths, further back third. First Wairiki was fourth and Elysian last. Both first and second horses being the property of Sir Geo. Clifford, were bracketed on the machine. The times for the journey were:—Three furlongs, 39 3-5; four furlongs, 52 4-5; five furlongs, 1.7; six furlongs, 1.19 2-5; seven furlongs, 1.32 1-5; mile, 1.45 2-5; mile and a-half, 2.37 1-5. Klindini was the most supported in the big field which went to the post in the County Handicap. As usual, when the barrier rose, Miss Winnie was the quickest on her feet, and she showed the way through the cutting and across the top stretch just clear of Kilindini, Gipsy Belle and Dawn, with a bunched field next. Miss Winnie was the first to turn the corner for home, but once they straightened up for the run to the box, Salute dashed up on the rails, and quickly settling the opposition, she won by half-a-length from her stable mate Miss Winnie, with Sea Elf, who finished fast, close up third and Kilindini fourth.

Only half a dozen went to the post for the A.R.C Handicap, All Red winding up an odds on chance. Sedition was the quickest into his stride and when they raced past the stand he was showing the way to All Red and Waimangu with Downfall whipping in the field, but within striking distance of the leader. Except that Downfall improved his position half a mile from home there was no alteration in the positions throughout and a stirring finish saw Sedition win by a neck from All Red, with Downfall a length and ahalf away third. Waimangu finished next.

Danube was sorted out as the best of good things in the Midsummer Handicap, and so it proved. The favourite and Tenterhook were amongst the quickest away from the barrier, the pair ran almost in company to the straight, when Danube drew out and, easily stalling off a challenge from Goldfinder, he won by two lengths, with Solus only a head behind Goldfinder. Antoinette was well up fourth. n the Maiden Handicap Dan Leno carried most support, but he made a very poor showing, and at no part did the big chestnut look to have a chance. The history of the race is soon told. When the field started Michaloff rushed to the front, and, making every post a winning one, he never looked like being beaten, and won by a couple of lengths from Freevata, with Coromandel only a head away, followed by the favourite. In the concluding event, backers came strongly for Full Sail, with the result that he started favourite. After a long delay at the post the barrier rose, Maiora being left altogether, and taking no part in the race. Full Sail and Theodore at once set out to make the running, but at the straight entrance Theodore was done with, and this left Full Sail to go on and win comfortably by two lengths and a-half from Santa Rosa, with Uranium a length away, and Delegate next. Following are the results: — THE FERGUSON HANDICAP of 125 sovs; second horse to receive 20sovs, and third horse lOsovs out of the stake. Six furlongs. 2—Messrs. FOURTH DAY. DANUBE WINS THE ROYAL STAKES. BOBRIKOFF DEFEATS ALL RED. As on the three previous days, the A.R.C. were again fortunate regarding the weather, and an ideal day attracted a large assemblage to Ellerslie to witness the final day’s programme of racing provided by the club. The meeting was about the most successful in the history of the club, and the secretary (Mr. J. F. Hartland) should be highly satisfied with the results. Mr. R. B. Lusk (judge) filled his position well, giving his decisions promptly, while Mr. C. O’Connor manipulated the barrier. The handicapping of Mr. Morse resulted in several very close finishes, but there were also several easy victories. The Auckland City Band (John West), Garrison Band (G. F. Cater) and First Battalion Band (P. H. Mohr) each contributed choice programmes of musical items. The totalisator staff under Mr. H. H. Hayr were kept hard at work throughout the meeting, as the following table will show: —

£11,284 10s compared with last year, and of £7783 compared with the 19u(1908 gathering, which previously stood as the record. In addition, 47 bookmakers were licensed at £2O 10s each, returning £963 10s in fees, or a total return from this souce for the meeting of £4079 10s, as against £3136 10s last summer. THE RACING. Miss Mischief carried most money in the Goodwood Handicap, and she justified the confidence placed in her by winning very easily. Maiora was the first to show out, and at the end of three furlongs was joined by Tanekaha, and this pair carried on the running till the straight was entered just clear of Tattoo and -,xiss Mischief. Below the distance the favourite shot up and soon settled the issue, winning in a canter by a length and a-half from Tanekaha, who was two lengths in front of Aristocrat. Tattoo was fourth. Goldfinder was favourite in the Sylvia Handicap. The field ran well together till the cutting was reached, when Goldfinder drew out half a length from Solus and Tenterhook, with Apellon next. The three firstnamed, with Duma, entered the straight almost in line, and they were all hard at it when the distance was reached. Here Apellon dashed up, and, finishing gamely, he won a grand race by half a length from Goldfinder, with Solus only a neck away third. Tenterhook was close up fourth. In the Grandstand Handicap Diabolo commanded most support, with Sedition next in demand. The big field was despatched to a splendid start, and when they raced past the stand Uranium was just clear of Wauchope and Roosevelt, with the remainder of the field in a bunch, next. At the back stretch Uranium was three lengths out from Lochbuie and Wauchope, and then came Roosevelt, Chanteuse and Maheno in the order written, and the order was the same when they started for the run across the cutting. At the home turn Uranium was done with, and the field closed up. At the distance Roosevelt shot out, and finishing up in good style, he won a most

exciting race by a length from Diabolo, who made up a lot of ground over the last couple of furlongs. Waimangu was only a neck away third, and then cathe Wauchope and Lochbuie together.

War Song caused a deal of delay at the post in the Royal Stakes, for which Danube was a strong favourite. When the barrier went up War Song was quickest away, and with Full Sail and Danube close up next, he showed the way through the cutting and across the top stretch, and so they ran till well into the straight, when Danube and Full Sail challenged, and a great race to the post saw the two-year-old score by a neck, with War Song only half-a-length behind Full Sail in third place. Maori King was fourth. Shrapnel was made favourite for the Hurdles. Master Paul was soon out in front, and he led till three furlongs from home, when grapnel and Lady Patricia closed up, with Reservoir next. Lady Patricia and Shrapnel jumped the last hurdle together, but once on the other side Lady Patricia drew out and won comfortably toy two lengths from Shrapnel, who just lasted long enough to beat Reservoir a neck for second money. Scotty fell at the fifth fence, and Castadrift at the seventh. Tn the Newmarket Handicap several of the candidates carried a lot of coin, but when betting stopped Lady Medallist and Salute were the most backed with the first-named favourite. Salute, Kilindini and Miss Winnie were the first to move, but they had not gone far before General Soult rushed to the front, and Tarina raced into second position. Across the top stretch Tarina was in front, but soon gave way to General Soult, and the latter was the first to turn for home. Once the judge’s box loomed up in sight the field closed up, and a great race to the post saw Salute win by half-a-length from General Soult, with Kilindini about the same distance away. Devonport was fourth. All interest centred in the meeting of All Red and Bobrikoff. The latter started an odds-on chance. First Wairiki set out to make the pace, and he held a length’s advantage till just on half a mile from home, when Bobrikoff took command a length in front of All Red.
