AUCKLAND RACING CLUB’S SPRING MEETING.

FIRST DAY’S RACING ON SATURDAY. On Saturday Aucklanders will have their attention turned to Ellerslie, when the Auckland Racing Club will open their spring gathering. As is always the case, fine weather is all that is needed to make the meeting a success and to ensure a large attendance. All the arrangements are well in hand, and with capital acceptances for each and every event, in all of which Mr. Morse appears to have the winners well concealed, some exciting racing should result- Special train and tram services will be run for the conveyance of those attending to and from the course. The programme opens with the Tradesmen’s Handicap of 125sovs, one mile, in which the following horses are engaged:— Seldom 9.2, Coromandel 8.12, Epsom Lass 8.7, Dr. Shimose 8.4, Continuance 8.4, MiehaelofE 8.0, Ereevata 8.0, Zinnia 7.11, All’s Well 7.9, Master Crispin 7.8, Cyrona 7.3, Urania 7.2, Beach 7.1, Flying Soult 7.1, Cuirasimon 7.0, Monocle 7.0, Lloyd’s 7.0, Lady Jane 7.0, Totika 7.0. Seldom, who ran well at Avondale, has 9.2 to carry, and he will probably find this quite enough. Coromandel (8.12) has been responsible for some good track work, as has also Michaelofl (8.0). Next we have the Welcome Stakes, for two-year-olds, five furlongs, in which are engaged Apelion 8.5, Duma 8.5, Goldfinder 8.5, Master Wairiki 8.5, Ashby 8.2, Echo 1 8.2,

Obsidian 8.2, Solus 8.0, Hamadryad 8.0, Lady Waterford 8.0, Monoplane 8.0, Wee Olga 8.0, Winning Post 8.0. With the exception of Ashby and Winning Post, the quality in this race js poor. Solus promised to be troublesome, but contracted a cold. Nothing is known of Master Wairiki, a member of H. French’s string. Then we have the Great Northern Guineas of 500sovs; second horse to receive lOOsovs and third horse 50sovs out of the stake. For three-year-olds. Colts, Bst 101 b; geldings, Bst 71b; fillies, Bst 51b. One mile. Tooman and McHugh’s br g Admiral Soult, by Soult —Pansy J. Cremer’s b g Spectre, by Soult— Apparition This race should provide a close contest between Salute, Maori King and Kakama, but Spectre may bring off a surprise. In the Manukau Hurdles of 175sovs, one mile and three-quarters, are: — Ben Jonson 11.10, Irish 10.4, Commander 10.2, Reservoir 10.1, Cavaliero 9.10, Cymri 9.9, Waipunehu 9,5, Leo 9.4, First Barrel 9.3, Diinborve 9.0. Ben Jonson has been frequently schooled over the steeplechase lately, and perhaps he is losing his pace. Irish has not done much galloping, but has been given plenty of hill work. Commander is well treated, and should be dangerous, while Reservoir proved he is well off for condition by winning the double at Poverty Bay last week. Cymri and Leo are promising jumpers, and there is a diversity of opinion as to who is the better of the two. The following good field remain in the Shorts Handicap of 170sovs, five furlongs:— Devonport 9.0, Dogger Bank 8.8, Loongana 8.8, Turbine 8.5, General Soult 8.5, Lady French 8.5, Mahinga (including 51b penalty) 8.0, Aimwell 7.‘,13, Sir Artegal 7.12, Bally Shannon 7.12, Necktie 7.11, Tarina 7.10, Jena 7.5, Hard Rock 6.12, Mary Anne 6.10. Turbine will probably start favourite, but Mahinga will be well backed. She is a great pony, but I should not be surprised to see Necktie with her wherever they finish, as this little mare is very well. The following 13 horses remain in the City Handicap of 400sovs, one mile and a-quarter: — Lochbuie 8.4, Coronetted 8.2, Sedition 8.1, Advocate 8.0, Te Aroha 7.13, Tattoo 7.12, Miss Winnie 7.7, Wauchope 7.4, Santa Rosa 7.2 Akarana 6.13, Inglis 6.12, Dr. Shimose 6.12, Aristocrat 6.10. Lochbuuie is doing splendid work on the track, as is also Advocate. Santa Rosa is very well, but he seems to be unreliable, and will not always do his best. Dr. Shimose, a visitor, put up a very poor gallop on Tuesday, when Rohepotae easily disposed of him. The following are engaged in the Hobson Handicap of 125sovs, six furlongs:— Hohungatahi 9.0, Blue Garment 8.5, Fleet Arrow 8.3, Wild West 8.2, Waiotahi 8.2, Hard Rock 8.2, Rimlock 8.2, Mistime 7.13, Impulsive 7.12, Regain 7.9, Rohepotae 7.9, Aristos 7.1, Tunatahi 7.0, Pairawaatu 7.0, Lady Dot 7.0, Hoango 7.0, Prophet 7.0, Dazzling 7.0, Aoroa 7.0, Scotch 7.0, Stepsonicle 7.0, Madam Soult 7.0. Ben Battle 7.0. Horses who have been galloping well are Blue Garments and Prophet, but there is such a large field engaged that one could easily expect a surprise. , The concluding event, the Flying Handicap of 175sovs, seven furlongs, has drawn an acceptance from the owners of Dawn 9.0, Tamainupo 8.13, Uranium 8.6. Waimangu 8.1, Maheno 7.11, Delegate 7.8. Rauparaha 7.7, Rarata 7.6, Spate 7.5, Jewellery 7.5, Carmania 7.1, Aristocrat 6.13, Azoff 6.12.

Dawn is looking a lot better lately, but the best work has been registered by Waimangu, Maheno, and Tamainupo, but should Uranium be anything like the Uranium we have seen, she would easily go out favourite. The meeting will be continued on Tuesday (King’s Birthday), and concluded on the following Saturday,
