VICTORIA RACING CLUB’S SPRING MEETING.

PRINCE FOOTE WINS THE DERBY. The Victorian Racing Club’s Spring Meeting was inaugurated on Saturday in delightfully cool weather. Flemington looked at its best, and attracted a large and fashionable attendance, including the Governor-General, Lord Dudley, and the Countess of Dudley, the State Governor, Sir H. Gibson Carmichael, and Lady Carmichael, Lord Chelmsford (Governor of Queensland) and Lady Chelmsford, and Sir G. Barron, Governor Of Tasmania. The New Zealand-bred Kenlie (by Stepniak) accounted for the Coburg Stakes in a smartly run race, beating the Maltster gelding Malmsey. Montcalm looked like winning at one time. Magnificent weather was experienced on Tuesday, and there was an enormous attendance at the Melbourne Cup, the racecourse presenting a dazzling picture, scintillating gaily in the sunlight. There was intense excitement over the big event, public opinion being divided in favour of Prince Footer Alawa, and Trafalgar. It was a beautiful race. McLachlan, on the Derby winner, watching hie opportunity, sailed home amidst tremendous cheering, having won in time equal to the best Clip records. Jockey McLachlan rode Prince Foote for the first time, and describes him as the gamest horse he ever rode. The New Zealander Ngauruhoe made a dashing win in the Railway Handicap, looming away at the half-distance in clinking style. Ngauruhoe was not much, fancied by the public. Four furlongs from home Alawa rushed up and led into the straight, with Trafalgar, Eric, and Aberdeen in close attendance, a big division being bunched together. When heads were fairly in a line for home Prince Foote shot up, ana the Derby winner, finishing up his task like a racehorse, cut down the oposition, and drawing away, won handsomely by three lengths, amidst terrific cheering. Alawa was a head in advance of Aberdeen, and then followed Trafalgar, Flavel, Nushka, and Danilo, finishing in that order. Idyll was last. Time, 3min. 27%sec.
