WANGANUI.
(From . Our .Qwn Correspondent). WANGANUI, Sept. 27. The gelding Hardwork, by The Workman —Hark, who was a fair performer in his time, both over hurdles and on the flat, died the other day. at Hawera. . , The . black filly, by Field Battery— Katriona, owned by Mr. D. Ross, and trained by.i W- Price, put up a very pleasing gallop one morning last week over four furlongs, beating Master Laddo, one of Fred Tilleys two-year-olds, and Dearest, a two-year-old in Prosser’s stable. The daughter of Field Battery is a very handsome, evenlymade filly, and is likely to prove one of the best of the two-year-olds, if looks go for anything. She may start in the Hastings Stakes, in which Montiform and Dearest will also first appear in public. The latter was given a flutter with the colours up during the second days’ racing, and moved very nicely. She is a very nice cut of a youngster, and should be able to gallop. The four-year-old gelding Coronetted (by Coronet —Ran Rau), winner of the Spring Handicap here, is on the sale list. He should not be long in finding a purchaser, as he is a good one and sound as a bell. ■, Mr. Harry Goodall informs me that the Rangitikei Club made a profit of over £5OO out of their recent Spring Meeting. Visiting sportsmen from Hawke’s Bay speak highly of the way Bollin is shaping in his preparation for the N.Z. Cup. Some doubt has been cast upon his staying powers, but if what one hears is correct the Birkenhead — Goyt gelding will see out the two miles as well as any of those engaged. Latest reports from Marton state that the injured horseman, F. Flynn, is making satisfactory improvement. A colt by Maniapoto, owned by Mr. Dan Hughes, is said to have showed neat action in a canter at Hawera recently. It is understood that Mr. A. Hall’s lease of Wirral expires at the end of this month, so that his win on Saturday did not come any too soon.
