WANGANUI.

WANGANUI, July 12. Nominations for the Marton JockeyClub’s Meeting, to be held on the Ist and 2nd of September, close on Aug. 13th. In connection with the above meeting, several Wanganui owners are of opinion that a mistake has been made by the club in stipulating that winners of any race after the declaration of weights will have to carry a 71b. penalty. It is contended tnat it would be much better to provide for winners to be rehandicapped, inasmuch as a number of owners intend starting their horses in the open events at the Egmont-Wanganui Hack Club’s Meeting, just to help the club along, and yet if one should win a £lO stake the horse will have to carry a 71b penalty, which would be an absurdity. It would have been wiser to have left it to the handicapper, Mr. Geo. Morse, to rehandicap winners. Compass has been working on the local tracks since he returned from Hawke’s Bay, and has been responsible for some attractive jumping. The

son of Daystar has been taken down to Wellington, where he will endeavour to repeat his last year’s performance of scoring in the Hurdles. Compass has been nicely handicapped in the Grand National Hurdle Race, in ■which he has been given 10.8. Stayboy has been pleasing the touts at Hawera recently, and is expected to run well at Trentham, as should also Lingerer, Waione, and Coronetted. The latter has been moving very freely in his work recently. Word comes from Feilding to the effect that Maidi will not be sent to Trentham, nor to Riccarton, as the roan mare has been showing signs of the injury sustained at Ellerslie. The daughter of Handsome Jack will be given a spell, whffih °Uonid benefit her considerably, as she has done a lot of racing during the last six months or so.

It has not yet b"- — -■’-■ e ”’tely settled whether Belario is to go to Trentham with Irish Rifle, though it is more than likely that both will be on hand to compete there next Saturday. Jimmy Peachey will take the pair on to Riccarton at the conclusion of the Wellington Meeting. Harry Jackson trainer of Maidi, Strategist, and others, has just had a three-year-old gelding by Mauser——Culverin sent to him. The gelding is a half-brother to Letherin, and looks a promising sort. Auratus is all right again, and has been shaping very nicely at Waverley. The Gold Reef geld’ng is an almost certain starter at Trentham. Alick Hall’s team, St. Bill, Wirral, and Lull have been acquitting themselves well during the last week Caso, and there will be much surprise if they do not win a good race or two between them very shortly. The Egmont-Wanganui Hunt Club will hold their annual race meeting on the 26th August. The programme includes seven events, four for hunters only and three open events —a hurdle race and two flat races. Several hunters are in work here, getting ready for the above meeting, while at Waverley also five or six are in training. The Waverley Racing Club will hold its annual meeting of members on the 24th inst., when it is understood the balance-sheet will show a very satisfactory profit on the year’s working. It is practically certain that the club will decide to put in hand the work of improving the stand right away, in order to have the work done before the annual race meeting on the of November.
