In replying to the toast of “The Winner ” Arnst said he was a proud man not only because he had retained the title but because he had beaten such a good man. There was no man in Australia to beat Webb who was a true sportsman and a white man. He spoke very strongly concerning those who thought the race was not going to be a straight one. Regarding Barry or Durnan, Arnst thought it was hopeless to try and get them to come to New Zealand but should either do so he hoped the race would be decfded in Wanganui.

It is stated that Whelch’s friends at Akaroa have issued a challenge on his behalf to the winner of the Mitchell-Pearce race, to take place on the Parramatta River on the 17th July, for a match for £2OO aside to be rowed at Akaroa.
