Mr. Alex. Mitchell, the well-known gentleman rider, had the misfortune to lose a gold watch chain and sovereign case, which were stolen from his clothes while hanging in the jockey’s room at the Hawera racecourse on Easter Monday. A silver watch attached to the chain was not taken. The local jockey, L. Nodder, also lost a watch from the same room. • * * * The racehorse Defiance, who won the Grand National Hurdles at Christchurch nine years ago, failed to meet with a solitary bid when offered by Mr. Stephenson, by auction, at his mart the other day. ♦ * * * Tatterdemalion and Cachuca have just resumed training at Randwick with a view to the jumping events of the winter months. * * * * A handicap, with the slowest horse to have a mark of 2.9, is being talked about for the Grand Circuit meeting at Detroit next summer. If the race is given, it will take the place of the usual Free-for-all Trot. Twenty-five thousand dollars has been suggested as the amount of the purse.
