LAWN TENNIS.

Mr. P. B. Colquhoun was on March 1 elected president of the Australasian Association in succession to Mr. W. H. Forrest. The genial Percy plays a fine game of tennis, but is best remembered as perhaps the greatest three-quarter back the Sydney University F.C- ever put in the field. His swerving runs and dropped goals were simply wonderful. The new president should be the right man for the place. Dr. L. O. S. Poidevin was appointed as the representative of the association in England. THE DAVIS CUP. Lawn tenn's enthusiasts may this year have the pleasure of welcoming a team of English players to Australia, as Mr. T. H. Hicks, the hon. secretary of the Lawn Tennis Association of Australasia, has received by cable a challenge from the English Association, on behalf of the British Isles, for this year's contests for the Davis Cup. America has also lodged a challenge. The two challengers may agree amongst themselves where the preliminary round shall be played. Last year the British team went over to America, and was defeated, and it is certain that this year the English Association will make a big effort to have this tie played in England, at Wimbledon after the championships. It is extremely doubtful, however, whether Amer.'ca will fall in with this suggestion, as past experience has proved that the gate in England is small, while they know that by coming to Australia a much larger amount is assured them towards paying the cost of their trip. If no agreement can be arrived at between the two nations, they must, under the rules governing the competition, play the match in Australasia, and it is qu'te on the cards (thinks the “Australasian”) that Melbourne would be chosen as the meeting place. The challenge round against Australasia will be played in Sydney, either towards the end of October or in the bcgmning of November. WEST END CLUB’S TOURNAMENT.
