THE SCULLING CHAMPIONSHIP OF THE WORLD.

Next Tuesday on the famous Wanganui River will be decided yet another contest for the sculling championship of the world. The holder of the title, William Webb, is very fit and in his training work with Green has been pleasing everybody. He should be ready to row the race of his life. D'ick Arnst’, the chal'enger, who has been rowing with Fogwell, is also in great form, and is full of confidence in his ability to win. All the crack Sydney scullers favour his chance, while the Wanganui folk will not hear of a defeat for their townsman Webb. Under the circumstances the race should be a great one. Immense interest has been taken in it, quite a number of enthusiasts coming over from Australia to see the contest. May the best man win.

H.M.S. VICTORY.

1 have often been amused listening to Aucklanders who have been to England and seen the old Victory at Portsmouth. They have talked as though the famous three-decker was just as Nelson left it. As a matter of fact this is not so as she has the masts of H.M.S. Shot, the wrong rig, guns of incorrect type, and is painted a different way and has been altered in many other ways. It is pleasing to know that the Boaru of Admiralty intend to make the old line-of-battle ship exactly as she was on that fateful October 21, 1805. She will be docked and made thoroughly seaworthy, trimmed down to her proper water line, fully rigged, and a search made for al! her original guns, most of which, by the way, have been found. Everything is to be historically accurate in regard: to mast, sails, rigging, guns and internal arrangement, and she is to be an exact duplicate as it were of her old self. Furthermore, the old ship is to be painted as she was when she went into action., viz., black and yellow, with vermillion gun ports.
