THE OTAHUHU TROTTING CLUB’S SPRING MEETING.

CONCLUDING DAY. The spring meeting of the Otahuhu Trotting Club was brought to a conclusion in beautifully fine weather, and as a result there was a large attendance at Alexandra Park. The sport provided was of a most attractive order, and some good racing was seen. Mr. F. Yonge and his executive managed the meeting excellently, and, barring a couple of protests, everything passed off without the slightest hitch. During the afternoon the sum of £2595 was handled at the totalisator, as compared with £3278 for the corresponding day last year. The total figures for the meeting ran out to £5322, a decrease of £314 10s. Mr. C. O’Connor acted as starter, and Mr. R. Absolum as judge, ■while Messrs. Edwards and Macmanemin were the timekeepers. The Garrison Band helped materially . to en livn proceedings with selections of music. , ... The afternoon’s sport opened witn the Innovation Trot, one mile, a nice field of eleven going to the post. Norrington led out, but was soon passed by Manxman, who looked to have a winning chance. He got up badly, however, in the straight, and Mandarene finishing fast, beat him home by nearly twentv yards. Norrington was twice as far-off third, with Rosie Wilkes a close fourth. The Trotting Handicap, one mile, was contested by a field of ten. Adelaide went off with the lead, with Inaha and Pukerimu following. At the back Cleveland’s Pride had gone into second place, with Macquarrie closing up. lago came through in the straight, but could not reach Adelaide, who won by fifteen yards, with Cleveland’s Pride three yards behind lago, Macquarrie fourth. Next came the Epsom Handicap, a six and a-half-furlong race for ponies. It is rare to get a good field in a pony event nowadays, and but four went to the post. Frontino dashed away with the lead, and he piloted the field into the straight, where Glenora came with a wet sail and won easily by two lengths, with Octoroon a like distance behind Frontino. Then came the Suburban Trot, two miles, eight going to the starting-line. Happy went off with the lead, but after going half a mile was passed by Agnes B the former hanging on stubbornly. Robex, who had been coming up steadily went to the front, and a break by Agnes B. let up Happy into second place. Coming on at his ease Robex won by ten yards from Happy. Agnes B. was third and Bogey fourth. The winner subsequently survived a protest for inconsistent running. When the excitement of this had cooled down the Class Trot, a mile and a-half came on for decision, nine turning out for it. Autocrat, with a fairly liberal allowance, was' soon out in front, a long gap separating him from the second horse, Maplewood. Viscount, trotting in good style, then got into second place, but he cou make no impression on who won bv forty yards, Le Rosier being far further back, while Maplewood was a close fourth. Anther potest for inconsistent running was put in, but was dismissed. The next item was the Trot, one mile and a-half, field of ten going out for this Rita B was soon stepping out m front wit Orakei and Black Bess next. All the way round Cavaler wa ssteadi y hauling the field, and six fu^ lonS X aro ] d home he went to the front. H Huon set sail in chase, but cO B never get within striking distance, L valier winning by thirty yards. Rita W. was third and Black Bess fourth. A quintette of ponies came out for

the Flying Stakes, four furlongs. Quadroon and Mahinga hopped out together, but they had not gone far before Mahinga was' in front. Nearing the bend Elenore ran into second place, but Mahinga got further and further away, and finishing up in good style, fairly romped home four lengths ahead of Elenore, with Quadroon a length further away. The concluding event was the Telephone Trot, one mile. There were only four starters, and the issue was never in doubt. Barmeguie, on the limit and trotting in good style, was never caught, winning easily from Lady Love, with Dan Tracey third. Thus ended a very successful meeting.
