WANGANUI.

WANGANUI, June 10.

Mr. H. McManaway, the owner of Arahura, is so upset at the jockey Fahey’s death that he does not intend racing the horse again. It is not because of any lack of confidence in Arahura’s jumping powers that Mr. McManaway has come to this deci-

sion, but if fate brought about a similar result on, another occasion he would be the victim of. remorse. ■

On the strength of his good showing at the recent Wanganui meeting, The Stake was well supported by stay-at-home backers on each day at Otaki, but The Officer gelding let his supporters down badly. He banged into the hurdles very hard both days, and the only wonder is that he did not come down.

Wanganui visitors to Otaki not unnaturally took considerable interest in the doings of Armistice’s full brother Waimaria in the Hack Hurdles on the first day. The son of Mahaki jumped well, but showed no pace. He may do better later on. Mr. W. Holmes, of Bulls, did the starting at Otaki, owing to the illness of Mr. T. Cameron. He is said to have got through his work fairly well, and with experience may make a success as a starter. George Price, the well-known local rider, left for Sydney last week. It is stated that he will not do any riding on the other side, but it is more than likely he will have a mount or two. Harry Jackson will continue in charge of Mr. G. F. Moore’s Tayforth stables until the end of the season. Miss King is again in work at Feilding, and is said to be quite sound. She ought to have benefited by the spell. It is understood that the owner of Apa and Frisco will journey over to Australia with his horses, which will be given an opportunity to distinguish themselves at the A.J.C. Spring Meeting, and probably at the V.R.C. meeting later on. A split hoof has kept Frisco out of commission since the Feilding Spring Meeting, but the son of Earwig is now all right again, whilst Apa is also very well. Those who saw Penates win at the Wanganui meeting were quite prepared to hear of his success at Otaki. The son of Reunalf is indeed a very fine galloper, and is likely to keep the Flaneur strain to the front next season. The annual race meeting of the Eg-mont-Wanganui Hunt Club, to be held in August, is being looked forward to with considerable interest. Some good jumpers have been seen out at the various meets, and there is every prospect of good fields going to the post. King’s Birthday scored a win at Otaki, though not before time. The son of Sou’-wester has repeatedly done splendid work on the track, only to disappoint his connections when the colours were up. Now that he has got his head in front it is to be hoped he will keep in winning vein for the sake of his trainer and owner. Lull has been given several turns over the schooling fences recently with a view to competing in the steeples at the Napier Park meeting. Sedgemoor is shaping well over the big country at the Egmont-Wanganui Hunt Club’s meets. After the hunting season is over the son of Sedgebrook will be given a chance to distinguish himself in some of the spring hurdle events.

Walter Raynor has had an addition to his string in the shape of a lull brother to Sedgemoor, which will be known as Sedgement. By the way, the owner of Sedgemoor, who intends putting that gelding over hurdles, also means to give Anemone a chance to show what she can do over the small sticks.

Daisy Paul is to be given a spell by Trainer Jimmy Peachey, who is in future to have charge of the hurdler Handsome Rose, who is to be put in work again. Peachey will also put Weary Bill in commission again shortly.
