A SLY-GROG CASE.

In detecting instances of sly-grog selling. the probationary constable appears to be specialy useful, and to his lot falls the work, if it can be called work, of obtaining, in most instances, the evidence requisite for the conviction of offenders who are eager for profit from the sale of drink, but who have not first of all gone through the formality of obtaining a license. In the Wellington Court recently, a woman named Catherine Mowbray was charged with selling porter and beer on two occasions to William McDermoth, and with selling beer to James Collogan. James B. Mowbray was charged with being the occupier of premises on Lambton quay, not duly licensed., where liquor had

been sold. The accused pleaded guilty to all four charges. Sub-Inspector Donovan stated that the two accused, husband and wife, kept a restaurant in Lambton quay. Probationary constables were sent to the place, and drink was sold to them on three occasions. Mr O’Regan appeared for the accused, and asked for leniency. It was a very short time since the accused had started to indulge.in sly grog-selling, and he was certain there would be no more of it.

His Worship said that the offence was a serious one, and could not be entirely overlooked. The male accused would be fined with costs (7s), and the female accused convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon to do so.
