THE INTER-VARSITIES’ TOURNAMENT.

The New Zealand University athletic tournament, to be held at Dunedin at Easter, is the seventh annual tournament. Canterbury College have been three times premiers, and Otago the same number, beating Victoria College, Wellington, last year by a narrow margin. The list of championship events is a large one, comprising:—100 Yards, 220 Yards, Quar-ter-mile, Half-mile, One Mile, Three Mile, Mile Walk, 120 Yards Hurdles, 440 Yards Hurdles, Long Jump, High Jump, Weight and Hammer Throwing. Each centre is allowed two representatives in each, first man counting 2 points and second 1 point. The winning college holds the Challenge Shield for the ensuing year.

The other special trophies are as follows: —Ladies’ Cup, for competitor scoring most points; Trevor Hull Memorial Shield, for the High Jump; cup presented by Mr. de la Mare for the Mile Flat; Sandstein Cup, for the Inter-college Relay Race. This cup has been held three times by Canterbury, twice by Otago, and once byWellington. The chief visiting athletes will be Oliphant and Dunlop (of Auckland), Goodbehere (of Wellington), and Harley, Collins, and Opie (of Christchurch). Taylor, Canterbury College speedy five-eighth, who will be found in the ’Varsity rear division this season, represents Canterbury in the sprints. The chief members of the Otago "team (says the Otago “Witness”) are Mcßride, Tansey, Croker, McCaw, Nuku, and Dr. Rogers. The absence of Foote, Gilray, and Harrison will be acutely felt this year. Still, if keenness goes for anything, Otago should win.
