THE THIRD TEST MATCH. The fact that a game is never won until it is lost was never more strikingly brought out than in the third test match at Adelaide. When Australia was 78 behind. on the first innings and had lost three wickets for 14 runs, it looked any odds on an easy win for the Englishmen. The magnicent stand made -by Hill and Hartigan quite altered the state of affairs, however, and ultimately the Australians won easily by 245 runs. The concluding scores were: — AUSTRALIA. First innings 285 Second innings 506 ENGLAND. . First innings 363 Second Innings. North Shore played on their own ground on Saturday, meeting City. They started batting on a capital wicket, but did not do too well, the innings closing for 176. Towards this L. Prime contributed a vigorous 61, which included ten boundaries. Hemus (64) and MacCormick (33 not out) batted well for City. With a score of 114 for three wickets they look to have the better chance but the tail is a long one, and may not get the runs. * * Ss * Grafton did badly against Eden. Batting first on a good wicket all were out for 117 (Sloman 31, Horspool 20). Eden made a very different display, and when stumps were drawn had put on 153 with but two wickets down. Cummings hit freely for 46, while W. B. Smith was caught at 35. Elliott (34) and Relf (21) played out time. Ponsonby and Parnell met at Victoria Park. Parnell won the toss, but commenced badly, losing three wickets for two runs. Olliff, however, soon put a different complexion on the game scoring freely all round the wicket. He got 131 before he was caught in the deep field. The innings realised 307, Sale getting 89 and Barry 39. Ponsonby have 22 on the slate, with all their wickets intact.

Parnell A (Marcroft 98) made 187 against Parnell B, who have scored 132 for six wickets (Otterson 56 not out).

Playing against Ponsonby 11., Grafton 11. made 267, Jack (73).. Hill, 67 not out), and Robinson (53). Ponsonby lost two wickets for 25.

Eden B made 132 (Gordon 40, Gray 31) against Eden A at Kingsland, who replied with 178 for nine wickets (Kavanagh 48, Totman 43).

City 11. scored 131 (three men short) against North Shore 11. Ellis top-scored with 48. North Shore lost eight wickets for 101.

The third test match at Adelaide was played in swelteringly hot weather, on the concluding day the thermometer reaching 108 deg. in the shade. What it was in the sun it is hard to say, and the cricketers must have been glad when the game was ended. As a Home paper puts it, they are cricketers not salamanders.

Hill and Hartigan were presented with souvenirs to commemorate their great stand of 271 for the eighth wicket. A shilling subscription on the ground realised £23.

Saturday’s matches at Christchurch were as follows:—West Christchurch, 161 and 188 for seven wickets (innings declared closed), beat St. Albans, 100 and 136. Riccarton, 379 for five wickets (innings declared closed), beat East Christchurch,; 173 and 142 for six wickets, on the first

innings. Sydenham, 245 and 137 for three wickets (innings declared closed), beat Linwood, 148 and 150 for two wickets (Reid 84 not out, Bishop 50). • sjs * * At Dunedin the matches were continued on Saturday, the results being:—Albion, 103 and 86, v. Grange, 121 and 69 for eight wickets. Downes did the hat trick. Carisbrook A 180 and five for 76. v. Dunedin, 145. Opoho. 79, v. The latter’s first innings had closed for 209. Midland made 408 (including 112 by Williams and 70 by Quee). Wellington beat Petone on the first innings. The former made 129 and 270 (Hickson 119, Mahoney 62, Weybourne 39). Petone made 113 and Cl for three wickets.
