ABOUT “TIPS.”
The “ New Zealand Times,” in a re-' cent issue, states that the subject of waiters’ “ tips” came up again .at the Arbitration Court, wnen the evidence given last week by one of the witnesses that an average waiter in an average hotel could augment his ■plages by £1 per week in “tips” was combated. One waitress stated that during the last three weeks she had received 5s from considerate customers. A waiter stated that last week, in a first class hotel, he received 7s in “ tips.” He admitted that the average for a waiter at a first-class hotel was fairly stated at 10s per week. A general hand at one hotel earning 27s 6d a week had, during the two months he had been in the position, not received a penny in tips. He was a married man, and could manage to save a little of his earnings each week, enough to tide him over an illness if necessary. This witness was a half-caste Chinaman.
