AUCKLAND ATHLETIC CLUB. The Auckland Athletic Club ran ’ their 31st Novice Handicap of 75yds • last Friday evening. The wet wea- ; ther necessitated postponement to Friday. “the weather came on bad again after the committee had decided t to run with the result that the club had the worst night that they have . experienced. The attendance also ■ suffered. From a nomination of 199 runners 155 accepted. The final was very open, no man in particular being ; sorted out as favourite, and resulted = in a very fine race. The placing was ■ as follows:, — ; F. Coles, 3yds * ; A. Tate, B%yds * F. C. Nicholson, 9*£yds ..3 W. Howard, 4 D. Taylor, 7%yds 5 *Dead heat. Third and fourth men ; half-yard away. Time, 7 3-ss. . A feature of the evening was the j number of dead-heats run, dead-heats , of three and double dead-heats being i amongst the number. The club have ! a fine nomination for Labour Day gas- ; lights, 221 having nominated. On Oc- ’ tober 16.th,' in addition to ordinary • prize money, a handsome cup will be presented by -Messrs. Kirkman and : Dennison to the winner. .! A walking ra'ce from Marton to Bulls : and back, a distance of 18 miles, took place last week. There were nine 5 competitors, and there was a great fin- ■ ish between C. Wilson (Utiku) andW. ; Brock (Marton), the fbrmer winning by inches. Housen (Bulls) was third, and Wakeman (Taihape) fourth, being 20 minutes behind. The time oc- ' cupied was 3h. 16m., or an average of 10m. 535. a mile. The competitors had to face a strong gale on the homeward journey.
