The Entries for the Comlng' D.J.C. Meeti ing—The Gore B.C.—Shrapnel • and Uranium Well Supported for; Avondale Cup at.. .Dunedin-—‘Bonifonii’s ' . Backers—N.Z. Cup Horses in Work.
• 1 DUNEDIN, September 25.' Owners have made a pleasing response to the Dunedin Jockey Club’S Iriv: : tatidtf‘’ to nominate for their spring meeting- and
a dozen, over last year’s, entry, and 22 above that of the previous season;! this must be considered satisfactory, and there is ample material engaged to ■ ultimately allow the .club to present a good programme of sport to their patrons. The spr ng gathering at Wingatui is usually regarded as a local affair, but visiting owners have not passed by the j programme, and a good percentage of outsiders are engaged in the various events. In ,‘,he Mqsgiel.jHandicapv the,-Winter Cup winner,. ..Idealist, and- two bthet Northerners in Czar Kolohol and Paragon are found on the list, and a couple of local candidates for the New Zealand Cup, in the shape of Cr chton and Astrakhan, have had engagements claimed for them. The principal sprint events, welters and hack races have attracted fields of numerical strength, and owners of hurdlers have liberally patronised the jumping races. , Eight youngsters have beeri entered for the Juvenile Plate, and if they all go to the post it should provide one of the most interesting events at the meeing.
The Gore Rac’ng Club have sornewhat injudiciously adhered, to the dates originally selected for their spring meeting, and as a result, may lose a few nominations owing to the gathering being so close- to the New Zealand Cup meeting. No doubt owners .of moderates -will not be entirely d spleased. thereat because horses class enough to. enter, at Riccarton will be out of the way; when class is away the moderates will pay, as it were. The . National. Hurdle winner, Shrapnel, . was well supported loca’ly for the Avondale Cup, and Uranium; who proved' to be tne winner, also came in for a good deal of supports- ... Plenty of punters were already weighing the gold they intended to play up oh Boniform at the Randwick meefng, but his collapse will save them any further anxiety about the money they ' were going to win. ” Mr. F. Wallis, who is one of the most capable amateur starters that the writer has seen operating at the barrier, is brice more on the Gore programme as honorary starter to the club. Our New Zealand Cup horses and others which have been nominated at the C.J.C. spring, are do ng useful work on the tracks, and as most of these claim engagements at the D;J.C. spring meetting a line shou’d soon be obtained as'to their prospects at Riccarton.
