ANTICIPATIONS.

THE AVONDALE JOCKEY CLUB’S AUTUMN MEETING.

(By “The Judge.”) Next Saturday the flags will be mast-headed at Avondale, when the A.J.C. will make a commencement with the Autumn Meeting. As is well-known the Avondale course is one of the very best in the colony, being a mile in circumference and as level as a billiard table. The appointments are excellent, and therefore it is not to be wondered at that it enjoys a larger measure of popularity. Just now the course is looking at its best, and as a visit to Avondale on a fine day is quite a treat, all that is required is for King Sol to be in a kindly mood on Saturday to ensure a good attendance. Mr. H. H. Hayr, the secretary, can always be relied on to have all matters properly fixed up to ensure smooth working; indeed, the club’s executive have a good name in this respect. Special trains will leave Auckland at frequent intervals for the course, while there will also be a good service of *I)U.SGS* The first event will be the Maiden Plate (6 furlongs), for which a field of fourteen are down to compete. The race looks particularly open, and it is very hard to say what will run well. Possibly the best are — MERRIMANU PARROQUET ST. CYREN The Hurdle Race (2 miles) follows, six being engaged. Ido not quite know what Landlock can do over hurdles, but rumour says he is an adept. He is sure to start favourite, and it is possible places may fall to LANDLOCK BONOMIANA SHRAPNEL Next comes the Oakley Handicap (5 furongs), in which eleven are down to compete. Despite his big weight of lOst, Black and Gold will be a very hard horse to beat, for he is a dandy sprinter. The judge may place them BLACK AND GOLD DISCOVERER LADY CRESSY There are eight in the Juvenile Handicap (5 furlongs). The topweight Quadroon has shown a weakness for this course, and she ought to win. Probably they will finish QUADROON NECTIE HALDANE The Avondale Handicap (1% miles) follows, and with thirteen acceptors a conundrum has been set backers. Akarana has too much weight. Scotty’s form at Easter was wretched, but he looks well to the eye. Delania looks right in it, but is notoriously unlucky. Uhlander is certain to run well, and Lucrece is a very game pony, who will take some beating. Carl Rosa’s win in the Birkenhead Handicap at Ellerslie will not be forgotten, and he must have a chance. Possibly places may fall to CARL ROSA DELANIA UHLANDER or LUCRECE There are eleven in the First Pony Handicap (5 furlongs), and this should provide an exciting go. Storyteller seems well treated compared to his Alexandra Park weights, and he ought to win. This may be the order STORYTELLER RUATAMATA OCTOROON No less than eighteen have accepted for the Chevalier Handicap (4 furlongs), and he will be a wise man who spots the winner among this crowd of moderates. To make a shot at it I will take LADY CRESSY CELERITY TURBINE The concluding event is the Railway Handicap (6 furlongs), ten being down to compete. On her running at Ellerslie Te Aroha should have a big say in this. Tui Cakobau was a great disappointment at Ellerslie, but I cannot think that was his true form. The previous event will throw a strong light on the race, but at present the likely place-fillers look to be TE AROHA TUI CAKOBAU SOULTMAID
