AQUATICS.

The re-sail in Class I. by yachts of the Royals again ended in failure. Rangatira and Ngatira turned out to race, but after a slow sail down the harbour in a light breeze, it was found that the squadron buoy had been carried away, and ultimately both cutters returned to their moorings. The season is now rapidly on the wane, and owners will soon be hauling their vessels up for the winter. From a cruising point of view it has been a very successful season, the weather having kept remarkably fine throughout. r < A cable states that George Towns has handed over the title of champion to his brother Charles. Webb, of Wanganui, has issued a challenge to row the new champion, and suggests June 20 as a suitable date. On his showing against Stanbury Webb ought to be able to give Charles Towns a splendid race with a good chance of beating him. He has put up a deposit of £lOO to bind the match. Dunsford, Harvey, Madden and E. Bailey (stroke) and T. Grey (cox.), won the final trial fours of the North Shore R.C. on Saturday. They beat Warren’s crew by two lengths. * * * * Mark, Farrell, Wright, Carlaw (stroke) and Elliott (cox.) won the final of the West End Club’s trial fours on Saturday, defeating Littleproud’s crew by a length. dore E. J. Schroeder, as the representative of America for the British International Cup, known as the Harmsworth trophy, which was won last year by the Yarrow-Napier representing England. Owing to an accident the Dixie was prevented from racing last year in the event. The race th’s year is to be held during the first fortnight in August, and the course will be inside the Isle of Wight. The distance will be 32 nautical miles. Great interest is being taken in the challenge, owing to the fact that the American boat lowered the world’s record for a mile last month, at Palm Beach, by negotiating the distance in 2m. 20s. lowering the previous record, which was held by Yarrow-Napier, at 2m. 225. Dixie is a 40ft boat, and has an eight-cylinder engine, developing 150 horse-power. The race for the cup will probably take place early in July. Dxie will also race in France.

According to the “ Referee,” the owner of Awanui, Mr. A. C. Saxton (Prince Alfred Y.C.) has issued his challenge to the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria for the Sayonara Cup. January next year is the time stipulated for the match, which will be sailed under the conditions as laid by Mr. Gollan when he handed over the trophy for competition.

The German Emperor has intimated his intention of aga'n presenting a cup and other prizes for the yacht race from Dover to Heligoland in the coming summer. The cup will be decorated with portraits of the King and the German Emperor. The race, which will be started from Dover on Saturday, June 15, will be sailed under conditions similar to those of former years, being open to yachts of 70 tons and pwards belonging to any recognised yacht club. The Kiel yachting week this year will begin on Thursday, June 20.

The yachts had a hard time on Sunday thrashing home in the southerly gale. Even with three reefs in some found the hard slammers too much for them, and ran back for shelter, returning to moorings next day. It was about the hardest blow we have had this summer, but only lasted a few hours.
