Sporting & Dramatic REVIEW AND Licensed Victuallers’ Gazette. With which is incorporated the Weekly Standard. THURSDAY, MARCH 21, 1907. SPORT AT EASTER.

A stranger visiting Auckland at Easter would 'have no hesitation in making up his mind that we are a sport-loving community, for truly it would be difficult to find the man whose particular hobby, no matter whether it be racing, running, cricket, tennis, bowling, yachting, or what not, is not catered for during the approaching holidays. First among the amusements comes the autumn meeting of the Auckland Racing Club. True it is that owing to the Canterbury and Feilding Clubs holding meetings at the same time we shall not have many Southern visiting horses competing, but, still, there will be some, while the Northern city is better off in this respect than her Southern rivals owing to her ability to hold successful race meetings quite independently of outside help. The acceptances for the Easter Handicap still leave twenty in, so that there seems a good prospect of a nice field contesting the big mile race. There are ten in the Brighton Hurdles, and one more than that number in the Autumn Steeplechase. The general entries are well up to the average, some of the events having very large numbers engaged. Altogether it would seem that fine weather is the one factor required to have the A.R.C. score another big success. Then there will be the great Easter Bowling Tournament, at which not only will there be representatives from over a dozen local clubs, but many country clubs will send their champions to compete. Very great interest is being taken in this tournament by bowlers, because at it the championship for the year will be decided.

For those who love the water there will be yachting and steamer excursions galore, and the inevitable picnics. Polo, cricket and tennis will also have innumerable devotees. Of late there has been a regular boom in professional running, and the two proprietary 'grounds intend to very amply cater for the requirements of patrons in this respect. Auckland will certainly hold her own as far as sport is concerned this coming Easter.
