NOTES.

(By

“The Judge.”)

Lady Annie is hitting out in good style at Riccarton, and a win is predicted for the ex-Aucklander at the C.J.C. meeting. *.♦ • • Scotty has been scratched for the Easter Handicap, in which he read to have a good chance. • * * * A somewhat curious incident happened while the field was at the post in the Paeroa Handicap. A litter of young pigs, attracted by the unusual sight, mingled with the people and horses, and the clerk of the course chased them round and round the crowd before he could disperse them. The little porkers seemed to enjoy the fun. Complimentary tickets for the Easter Monday meeting are to hand from Mr. W. G. Nightingale, secretary of the Waipukurau Jockey Club. • • • • ' The Auckland pony Frederick was beaten in his first race in Sydney, but ran well enough to suggest he will soon pick up a stake. • • ♦ • The double totalisator at Ellerslie should be an exceedingly popular institution. It had another good advertisement at Paeroa, when Hikuai and Sweet Alice paid a dividend of £404 2s. ♦ * * * The alteration of the Avondale J.C.’s date from April 27 to May 1 has been approved of by the Metropolitan Committee. * * ♦ ♦ The Auckland Racing Club has called for tenders for levelling the ground recently purchased, and work on it will be put in hand right away. « 2 « The veteran Kanaka won steeplechases at Paeroa, so it is evident the ancient black is not done with yet. The sum of £7321 10s was put through the totalisator at the Ohinemuri J.C. Meeting, an advance of £2485 10s on last year’s figures. * * * a Acceptances for the Patea R.C. annual meeting must be made to Mr. Mussel! Fleetwood by eight p.m. next Monday. 4 4c * * Mr. C. F. Mark will take nominations for the A.T.C. meeting up to nine p.m. next Thursday. ♦ ♦ * * The Masterton meeting takes place to-day and to-morrow. The next meeting of Dividend and Poseidon at Randwick will be awaited with interest. They are down to meet in several w.f.a events. Yolette ran particularly well at the Paeroa meeting, winning both hurdle races in good style. A. Gray had the mount on the daughter of Fabulist. Acceptances for the first day’s events of the A.R.C. meeting must be made by nine p.m. to-morrow (Friday).

THE TAKAPUNA JOCKEY CLUB. The winter meeting of the Takapuna Jockey Club will take place on Saturday and Friday, May 18 and 24. The Wanganui Jockey Club is out with their programme for the winter meeting, which is to take place on Thursday and Friday, May 23 and 24. As in all the programmes issued by

this popular and progressive club, the various events are well diversified and liberally endowed, and owners are sure to recognise this on nomination day. THE MANAWATU RACING CLUB. The Manawatu Racing Club is out with their programme for the autumn meeting, which takes place on April 24 and 25, and this will be found in our advertising columns. From this it will be seen that the bill of fare comprises the following items: —First day: Telegraph Stakes of 200sovs, six furlongs; Karere Hack Welter of 100 sovs, seven furlongs; Manawatu Stakes of 500sovs, six furlongs; Longburn Handicap of 250sovs, one mile and a distance; Linton Hack Hurdles of lOOsovs, one mile and three-quar-ters; Hokowhitu Hurdles of 150sovs, two miles;. Champion Hack Plate of 200sovs, seven furlongs; Taikorea Welter of 150sovs, one mile. Second day: Borough Handicap of 150sovs, seven furlongs; Hack Flying of 100 sovs, six furlongs; Autumn Handicap of 250sovs, one mile and a-quarter; Tlritea Hack Hurdles of lOOsovs, one mile and a-half; Pajpitoae Hurdles of 120sovs, one mile and three-quarters; Maiden Hack Scurry of 70sovs, five furlongs; Juvenile Handicap of 150 sovs, five furlongs; Farewell Handicap of lOOsovs, one mile. From this it will be seen that the Manawatu Club has adopted no niggardly policy, but has shown considerable liberality in endowing the races. The good result of this will doubtless be seen when Mr. J. M. Johnston, the secretary, comes to make up the list at ten p.m. to-morrow (Friday) night, the time for the closing of entries, for doubtless the total will be a very large one. THE MANAWATU RACING CLUB’S CLASSIC RACES. Owners should read the particulars appearing in this issue of the Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes of 1000 sovs, to be run at the Christmas meetings of 1908 and 1909. For the former, nominations for sires close with Mr. J. M. Johnston on April 18, and for yearlings on September 2. For the Sires’ Produce Stakes of 1909 nominations for sires close on April 18, and nominations for 1906 yearlings on September 2, 1907. Nominations for 1907 yearlings on September 1, 1908. It is said that we do not get enough weight-for-age racing, and therefore the effort of the Manawatu Club to promote a rich stake of the kind should meet with every encouragement. THE REMUERA POLO CLUB’S SPORTS. The Remuera Polo Club has decided to hold an afternoon meeting to take the form of sports and races on Friday, April 5, at Alexandra Park. There will be seven teams from the different clubs competing, and this will mean that some exciting contests should be seen. The programme will consist of a Bending Competition; Electric Flutter, two furlongs; Polo Ball Race; Cigar and Umbrella Race; Polo Pony Cup, four furlongs; Ladies’ Bracelet; Polo Pony Test; and Visitors’ Plate, six furlongs. Nominations for all events close with Mr. F. D. Yonge, the secretary, next Wednesday, March 27, at 5 p.m. Given plenty of entries a good afternoon’s sport seems assured. Treadmill’s half-brother Blazing Star, who has proved a failure on the turf, has been sold by Sir George Clifford, and will take up stud duties on the West Coast. * * * * The colt Franc (Soult —Anna) has had to be destroyed as a result of an accident with a barbed wire fence. * * * * The Horowhenua Cup was won by the Handsome Jack bay gelding Handsome Rose, who got home by three lengths.

MAUKU RACING CLUB. The annual race meeting of the Mauku Racing Club will take place on Messrs. Muir and Watson’s course on Thursday, April 11. Mark on Thursday, March 28, at 9 p.m. Full particulars as to the programme will be found in our advertising columns. THE THAMES J.C. AUTUMN MEETING. This popular fixture takes place next Saturday, and with fine weather, should prove enjoyable. The acceptances, ■which will be found in another column, are good, and augur well for some fine sport. A large number of sportsmen are sure to make the trip down, and these should note that the p.s. Wakar tere leaves Auckland at 7.15 a,m. on Fridhy and at 7.45 a.m. on Saturday, returning at midnight. Mr. Potts and his committee may be depended upon to have everything done on up-to-date lines, and the meeting should be a success.
