FIRST DAY There was fine weather for the opening day of the G.R.C. Summer Meeting. and the attendance was good, while the sport was most interesting, some of the finishes being extraordinarily close. The results were as follows: —• FLYING HANDICAP. —Gatenby, 6.7, 1, Contender, 8.12, 2; Gladsmuir 7.6, 3. Also started: Gaiety, Goldfield. Won by a length and a-half. Time, Imm 16 l-ssec. Dividend, £4 17 s. MAIDEN SCURRY. —Hmetiamata, 1, Kuanui, 2; Amusement, 3. There were 11 other starters. A most exciting finish. Time, 51 l-ssec. Dividends, £3 17s and £4 2s. ■ HANDICAP HURDLE RACE. — Cinque, 9.1, 1; Morpeth, 9.9, 2; Inspan, 10.10, 3. These were the only starters. Won by three lengths. Time, 2min 15 4-ssec.
