TARANAKI.

NEW PLYMOUTH, Feb. 13. A fair number of horses are in work at New Plymouth at the present time, and the local course presents an animated appearance in the morning. E. Russell’s horses are looking in great nick, although Cyrene’s legs still cause the trainer a certain amount of anxiety. Waikato should win a race before long. Southern Cross and Pangaroa (who is now trained by Edgar Russell) are to be put to the jumping game shortly, both having shown an aptitude for the business. Albert Rhodes, who has severed his connection with R. Barlow, is now training Golden Eagle, who is looking exceedingly well. The bookmakers who were recently fined in the local Magistrate’s Court on charges of betting at the Christmas Meeting of the Taranaki Jockey Club, have decided to test the validity of the by-laws under which the informations were laid. The hearing of the appeal is set down for March 18th. A considerable number of foreign horses have arrived at Hawera to fulfil engagements at the forthcoming meeting, for which good acceptances have been received. The following should run well in their different engagements:—Flying: Ballarat and St. Claimer. Whereroa Hurdles: Rookby and Handsome Rose. Ohawe Hurdles: Madie. Meremere Hack: St. Maria and Pearlie. Cup: Grenade and Truce. Hawera Welter: The Lark and Waikato. Waipapa Hack: White Lie and Highden. Produce Stakes: Flemsnap and Paul.
