A SHEFFIELD HANDICAP.
The firs, of a series of Sheffield Handicaps promoted by Captain Hutton Taylor, was commenced on Tuesday evening at the ground adjoining Alexandra Park, which was lit up by electricity, while there was a so a fuil moon to help dispel the darkness. There was a considerable attendance, and speculation was very brisk, a number of bookmakers being present and doing good business. A band helped to enliven proceedings, and there were also side shows. The preliminary heats resulted as follows :— SHEFFIELD HANDICAP, 130yds. First heat: V.. Little (10yds), 1; R. Sprague (12yds), 2. Time, 12 1-SS. Second heat: G. Hunt (13yds), 1; J. H. Edwards (11yds), 2. Time ,13s. Third heat: F. Gladding (7Jyds), 1; Tate (4yds), 2. Time, 13s. Fourth heat : J. M. Simpson (12yds), 1 ; C. Jackson (13yds), 2. Time, 12 2-SS. Fifth heat: G. Davidson (13yds), 1; G. Hirst (njyds), 2. Time, 12 2-SS. Sixth heat: P. P. Miles (11yds), 1 ; M. Hicks (14yds), 2. Time, 12 4-SS. Seventh heat: C. Humphries ((iijyds), 1 ; A. Morris (Syds), 2. Time, 13s. The semi-final and finals were run off last night, but too late for results to be given in this issue.
