AQUATICS.

(By

“The Reefer”)

The result of the match between Stanbury and Webb for £2OO a-side came as a great surprise. It was generally considered that Webb was flying at rather high game in tackling such an oarsman as Stanbury, but the

result has proved that the confidence of his hackers in Webb’s ability was not misplaced. The race was somewhat similar to that against George Towns, Stanbury leading until within a quarter of a mile from home and then collapsing. After the race- Stanbury confessed that he was rowed to a standstill, and it would seem that age is beginning to tell upon him. Webb is entitled to the highest credit for his victory, and is now fully entitled to take his place- among the world’s best scullers. The New Zealander is to be warmly congratulated on his brilliant achievement.

There was a good gathering of yachts at the Waiheke regatta on Tuesday, and quite a fleet of power launches.

The Hortons’ fine cutter Ariki has gone down to White Island, in the Bay of Plenty. With so much easterly weather she must have had a rather rough voyage.

Ferro has been down to Waiwera two or three times during the week. She is a very handy sort of power launch, being a good sea boat with fair speed.

Rainbow is away on a cruise to the North, an always enjoyable itinerary.

Whangarei regatta took place on New Year’s Day at Grahamtown. I have to thank Mr. W. N. Jack, the courteous secretary, for a ticket, but regret having been unable to make the trip.

I was very pleased to learn that Mr. C. H. Kilfoyle had been the recipient of a handsome pair of binoculars from the officers and members of the Royal N.Z. Yacht Squadron. Mr. Kilfoyle has acted as handicapper for years past, and has given an immense amount of time and trouble to the cause of yachting. . Vice-Commodore Alex. Alison made the presentation.

The Sydney yacht Rawhiti left for Melbourne on December 22. She is being sailed round in order that she can compete in the race for the Sayonara Cup, which was won by the Sayonara a couple of years ago in Sydney Harbour. . One of the conditions are that the visiting boat must be sailed to the scene of the contests, of which there are to be three. The races will be decided about the middle of January. Captain Fotheringham is navigating the Rawhiti down the coast. Her owner, Mr. Brockhoff, is also on board. Rawhiti will also take part in the La Carabine Cup Race, in which New South Wales will also be represented by Heather. The latter craft will be taken to Melbourne by steamer.
