HAWKE’S BAY.

NAPIER, November 14.

The Waipawa County Racing Club’s Birthday , Meeting, notwithstanding that it rained all day, attracted a large number of patrons to its rendezvous last Friday. When the totalisator figures were made up on the fall of the curtain it was found that had passed through the machines, a sum which is more than was handled at the Spring fixture last season. Mr A. Wood, who dismissed the fields, put up another notch on his gun by the equitable style in which he got the contestants away. Sir Benson, Mr J. E. Mclvor’s (of Polyanthus fame) three-y'ear-old gelding by Seaton Delaval, won the Maiden after an interesting tussle with Millenial, Park Rose, a Sylvia Park mare, a good third.

Merriwing, a full sister to Merriman and half-sister to Straybird, proved too good for the mob behind her in the Welter. The veteran White Squall getting second honours, and Pomegranate third. One of the outside lot in Te Hauke got the verdict in the Waipawa Handicap. Robin Link annexed the Homewood Hack in a very easy manner, though had Oakburn not got dealt with on a couple

of occasions he would have been hard to master. Robin Link is the first of his sire’s (Robin Adair) gets to be saluted as a winner. His dam Link in days of yore used to be a good mare in her class, and this son of hers looks as if he would not disgrace the solid family to which he belongs. Oakburn, by the way, is a halfbrother by Waiuku to Jack Pot. Hazel, who got second, is a younger full sister to Brenda. Pomegranate, a five-year-old mare by Sou’-Wester out of Nectarine, had a slice of luck in the Grandstand Hack, for while Te Hauke and Merriwing were busy arguing out the question at the bend for home they ran out from the rails. Lowe on Pomegranate took the situation in briefly, and rushing the mare to the opening got through and thereby got a two lengths advantage, and won at the finish by a half length under extreme pressure. The well bred Millenial, a four-year-old daughter of Apremont and the Carbine mare Millenium, triumphed in the Scurry Stakes. Twyford, the second place filler, looked a good thing to within a half furlong from home, when he nearly stopped to a walk, and Millenial coming with a fast run settled him by a length as the line was crossed. Park Rose flew in from White Squall and Linkless in the Hack Flying, for she was quick out of the slips, and making every post a winning one won by nearly a chain. Foalings to hand for the week are as followsAt Te Mahanga Ua (MuteWhaitiri) a filly, a mare by Quilt — Waiau, a filly both to San Fran.
