BOWLING.

There were five rinks in play at Rocky Nook on Saturday, the keenest fight being between Small and Taylor, former just getting home with a single point in his favour.

Seventy-two bowlers mustered at at the Ponsonby green on Saturday. The green is in capital order for the season.

I have to thank Mr. J. Anderson, hon. secretary Carlton Bowling Club, and Mr. J. M. Crosher, hon. secretary Devonport Bowling Club, for their courteous invitation for next Saturday’s openings. My chief regret in the matter is that I cannot be in both both places at the same time.

The Onehunga green was opened on Saturday, the function proving a particularly successful one. There was a very large attendance, all the rinks and croquet lawns being engaged. The grounds were gay with bunting, while the Onehunga band enlivened matters with a good selection of music. Mr. John Rowe, the Mayor, declared the green open, and some very interesting games resulted, the President’s teams winning by 154 points to 127. Afternoon tea was served by a ladies’ committee. The green is in faultless order and reflects much credit on the caretaker. * * * » The Mount Eden Club commenced operations for the season on Saturday, and the opening passed off very well, there being a good attendance, and everythng in apple-pie order. Mr. Nicholson made a capital opening speech, after which the flag presented by Mrs. Nicholson was unfurled amidst cheering. In the subsequent match the Vice-president’s team proved too good for the President’s, winning by 257 to 215. * * * * There were twelve rinks in play at Mt. Eden, and naturally some of the games were close enough to satisfy the most exacting. Bradley beat Walker by 22 to 21, Nicholson tied with Laxon, 22 all, and Young tied wth Armstrong, 18 all. Auckland and Remuera will be the last of the local clubs to begin, the openings taking place on Novembers. The match between New Zealand and New South Wales took place on Saturday, and resulted in a win for this colony’s representatives by 172 to 157. It was a peculiar game, some of the rinks winning very easily, while others went down badly. The actual scores were as follows: —N.Z.: Reid, Osmond, Smith, Payne, 37; N.S.W.: Hogue, Norris, McPherson, Hole, 17; N.Z.: Dee, Bastrings, Gardiner, Sneddon, 16; N.S.W.: Blundell Johnson, Garrtell, Fitzgerald, 34; N.Z.: Scott, Manning, Gillies, Wheeler, 16; N.S.W.: Leach, Walker, Crane, Howe, 27; N.Z.: Akhurst, Lefevre, Dall, Bouskill, 21; N.S.W.: Chapman, Denzer, Dove, Wilkie, 20; N.Z.: Rankin, Ledingham, Keast, Taylor, 22; N.S.W.: Scott, Marsden, Crump, Reeder, 25; N.Z.: Black, McGibbon, Hancock, Waddell, 31; N.S.W.: Taylor, Williams, Louden, Larbalister, 20; N.Z.: Durie, Natter, Buchanan, McLaren,

29; N.S.W.: Leech, Morgan, Strong, Currie, 14. Totals: N.Z., 172; N.S.W., 157.
