FOOTBALL.

The costume match between North Shoer and the Orakei Maoris was a successful function, and drew a large attendance. Some of the fancy costumes were very quaint, while the preliminary match caused much amusement. Afterwards a genuine game took place, the men of Orakei winning by 11 points to 6. Subsequently the teams dined together. The proceeds of the match are to go to the Football Clubs’ training shed fund. * * * * The New Zealand Rugby team at Durban has won all its matches, scoring 99 points to nil. In one representative match nine of the new Zealand combination were included. West beat East on Saturday by 10 points to 4 in the first game for the Paeroa R.V. Cup competition. » » ♦ ♦ Rotorua beat Tauranga on the latter’s ground on Saturday by 8 points to 3. * » Cambridge was defeated by Hamilton on Saturday at Hamilton by 8 points to nil. • • * • Glebe has won the Rugby premierships in Sydney this season; 18 points were scored by them as against 71 against them. Sydney and Eastern Suburbs tied for second place, and then followed Newtown; University, Balmain, South Sydney, Western Suburbs, St. George, North Sydney and Manly in that order. ••■ • • ■ The annual match between Law and Insurance took place on Saturday, the The representatives of law being the victors. The occasion was made a festive one, and numerous banners we’re displayed, “the Devil’s Own” being conspicuous in this respect. In the evening the two teams and friends attended “a smoker,” a pleasant time being spent by all. : Manawatu has been having a far from rosy time this season. On Saturday their list of defeats was added to when Hawke’s Bay won the match at Napier by 12 points to 3. The Sydney University team, which was so soundly beaten by Otago University in the first match, did much better at the second attempt. True, they were again defeated, but it was only by 3 points (a rty by Gillray) to nil. Verge all but kicked a penalty goal for the losers, the ball striking the cross bar. . * -♦ * * The Otago touring team met the Wellington reps, at Wellington on Sat- J urday, and after a keen fight won by € points to 3. The ground was in a very bad state, and the play was mostly confined to the forwards, in which department Otago were undoubtedly the stronger. For most of the first half Otago was attacking, but the defence was excellent. Just before ends were changed Ongly got a pass from Abbott and scored a very neat try, which Ekold failed to convert. In the second half by fast following up Abbott beat the opposing back and scored between the posts, but Eckold’s kick was poor. Wellington rallied, and a passing run by Mitchinson and Ryan gave the latter a chance to score near the corner, but Spencer found the angle too great to convert. Wellington maintained the attack, but failed to get through, and Otago won as above. • ♦ ♦ ♦ The Glasgow representative of the Distillers’ Company, Limited, Edinburgh, was so overcome with enthusiasm at the manner in which the “All Blacks’ triumphed over the flower of Glasgow football (says the“ Canterbury Times”) that he at once communicated with his firm, suggesting that they should provide a trophy for competition in New Zealand. The immediate result has been that through the local agents, Messrs. Fletcher, Humphreys and Co., the company has sent out a very handsome challenge shield, valued at £5O, for annual competition among the senior clubs affiliated to the Canterbury Rugby Union. The centre-piece comprises a heavilyembossed medallion, with raised-gold lettering, “Canterbury Rugby Football Union, 1906.” A raised shield in the centre shows a Rugby player in the act of dribbling a ball. Above the medallion is a silver ribbon with the gold inscription, “D.C.L. Challenge Shield,” interwoven with a wreath of laurel leaves in chased silver. At the bottom is a silver ribbon with the inscription, “For Senior Competition,” done in gold. The C.R.F.U. monogram holds a prominent place, embossed in gold, between those of Scotland and the City of Christchurch, and the D.C.L. monogram, similarly worked, finishes the embellishment. Ten silver medallions are provided for the names of the winning teams. The decorations are mounted on a massive .shield of dark carved oak.
