THE A.R.C. MEETING.

The A.R.C. Great Northern Meeting will be brought to a close on Saturday, when in the event of fine weather there should be another large attendance. As the acceptances do not close until after we go to press, it is impossible to hazard any forecast as to likely winners, but there is good prospect of some capital sport. My Wanganui correspondent writes too late for inclusion in proper column. It transpires that in addition to the £350 Mr. E. Stevenson paid for Miss King, he is to hand over £5O out of her first win. Some local punters are taking long shots about Boomerang for the next New Zealand Cup. It is understood that Kuroki is to be taken to Australia within a week or two. Frank Lind is at present at Otaki, but will return here after that meeting for the son of Fiske. The gelding should pay his way on the other side, as he is a good hurdler and has a lot of pace. Kuroki’s half-brother (by Crackshot) d’Nil has been sold to a patron of Fred. Tilley’s stable. It is said that the price paid for the gelding was £350. D’Nil ought to do well later on. He has a fine turn of pace, though a bit slow to begin, and can jump splendidly. It would be no surprise to see this gelding performing well next season.

Rangiwhenua is being kept going with a view to competing at the Hawke’s Bay Steeplechase Meeting. The grey son of Rangipuhi is in tiptop form at present, and should win a race for his popular trainer (Walter Raynor) shortly. It was very unlucky that he should have bumped up against such a good ’un as Exmoor in the Kaitoke Hack Hurdles at the recent Wanganui meeting. Harry Jackson’s team is doing serviceable work, and this capable trainer should soon have his charges in good trim again. Fontenoy is pleasing the touts, not because of the work he is doing, but on account of the improved appearance the colt bears, as he has filled out considerably and has lost that “ leggy” look which characterised him when in work before. He is likely to be seen to some advantage before long. A deal of money was won here over Exmoor’s win ,in the Great Northern Hurdles, but more would have come this way had Romany King got home. The latter was backed for a lot of money, both straight out and in doubles on account of his fine showing here. There were many who imagined the son of Gipsy King was sure to beat Exmoor, but there were not wanting those who expected the latter to show up better at Auckland, believing that the Grafton gelding would be improved greatly by his running here, as he was apparently. Mr. E. J. Watt, while in Wanganui for the Steeplechase meeting, purchased Hurimoana, a younger full brother to Oingo.

It is understood that W. Higgins will accompany Alec Hall’s team of jumpers to Australia if the trip eventuates. Higgins appears to be riding as well as ever he did, which is saying a lot, as ten or fifteen years ago he was one of the best and most fearless and dashing cross-country riders in the colony. Slow Tom is being supported already for the Grand National Steeplechase. His win at Dunedin yesterday was anticipated by a number of local backers, as was also that of Sychem, and these two horses cost the bookies a lump of money. George Price, the well-known local horseman, intends visiting Australia again this winter, and will leave in about a week’s time for Sydney. Dr. Graham, a well-known local sport, was elected as an extra committeeman for Wanganui at the recent meeting of the North Island Horse-owners’ Association. It is said that Mr. E. Stevenson (Miss King’s new owner) contemplates entering the Bay King mare for the V.R.C. Grand Nationals.
