Sporting & Dramatic REVIEW AND Licensed Victuallers’ Gazette. With which is incorporated the Weekly Standard. THURSDAY, MAY 10, 1906. ENGLISH CLASSIC EVENTS.

Although there is hardly the interest taken in the colonies in English racing as was formerly the case, yet the results of the big classic events *are generally noted by sportsmen. Two such results have come to hand by cable during the week, these being the Two Thousand and One Thousand Guineas. The first of these was won by Mr. Arthur James’ brown colt Gorgos, a son of the Derby winner Ladas and The Gorgon, the latter being by St. Simon from Andromeda, by Minting. Mr. James, who Is a steward of the English Jockey

Club, bred both Gorgos and his dam. As a twc-yorr-old Gorgos started on four occasions and won twice, his victories including the July Stakes at Newmarket and the Prince of Wales’ Stakes at Goodwood. Gorgos was followed home in the Two Thousand Guineas by Mr. Bass’ unnamed colt by Diamond Jubilee from Dame Agneta, one of the well-known Agnes family. Third position was secured by Mr. S. Darling’s brown colt Ramrod, a son of Carbine and Esk. It is safe to say that there is not a sportsman in the colony who would not have been pleased had the descendant of “ Old Jack” managed to get his head in front, for Carbine is getting into the sere and yellow, and it would have been a fitting climax to a great career if he had begotten a winner of one of the great classics. The result of the One Thousand Guineas will be of much interest to

Australians from the fact that it fell to Flair, which filly is owned by the Sydney sportsman Sir Daniel Cooper, whose orange and white jacket was well known on Australian tracks a decade ago. Flair is a daughter of St. Frusquin and Glare, a speedy mare in her day. Like Gorgos, Flair started on four occasions as a two-year-old, but her record is rather better than the colts, in that she scored on three occasions, the wins including the Imperial Produce Stakes at Kempton Park, the Middle Park Plate at Newmarket, and the Free Handicap on the same course. Both Gorgos and Flair are entered for the Derby and St. Leger, while the latter is in the Oaks.
