AT MANUKAU.

As explained before in these columns, the late contest for the seats on the Licensing Bench for the above district had resolved itself into a question for the electors to decide between those who wanted to close as many houses as the reduction vote would allow and thse who were anx-

ious to adopt a more medium course. With the record of no-license and reduction votes that were polled last December the prospects of the moderate party being returned did not appear too promising. However, setting to their task with, in the face of the discouraging prospects, a determination that deserves every credit, the moderate party secured an overwhelming victory over the whole-hoggers, a victory which did not leave one of the latter in the running. The voting last week and the voting in December is so different that one is compelled to look for influences other than the prohibitionist vote for bringing about reduction in Manukau.
