AFTER THE RACES

TAKAPUNA JOCKEY CLUB’S SUMMER MEETING. CONCLUDING DAY. The summer meeting of the T.J.C. was brought to a conclusion on Saturday under far less pleasant weather conditions than had been the case on the previous day. A cold wind was blowing, bringing several heavy rain squalls in its train, but these were fortunately not numerous enough to seriously mar the day’s enjoyment. The attendance once again was large, and the sport of an interesting character, some close finishes being seen. Betting was fairly brisk, the sum of £8785 going through the totalisator, this bringing the total for the meeting up to £25,050 10s. The double machine proved as popular as ever, the winning combination —Takaro and Gladstone —returning a dividend of £33 19s. The meeting all through was very capably handled by Mr R. Wynyard, the secretary, and his staff, while the starting of Mr. O’Connor and the judging of Mr. R. I.usk left nothing to be desired. Proceedings commenced with the Marine Handicap, i four-furlong scamper for maiden two-year-olds. There were five to compete, and the Cyrenian gelding Misere was made a warm favourite. He jumped off smartly, and just showed in front to the bend, where Lady Cressy passed Um. Directly heads were turned for home Deeley shook up the favourite, and a good race home resulted in him beating Lady Cressy by half a length, with Warbler three 1 engine off third. With Sol an absentee, only four contested the Waiwera Hurdles, one mile and three-quarters, and or these Cuiragno was made a rarner better favourite than Khama. From a capital start the four were bunched passing the stand, but then went on in front with the Frenchman as his nearest attendant. This was the order down the back, but before the stand was reached the second time Loch Fyne had gone into second place. Here Khama drew out a big lead, but down the back Cuiragno closed up. The top weight, however, had the race well in hand, and coming home in good style, he won by three lengths from Cuiragno, with Loch Fyne a poor third. With Inspiration the sole absentee, a nice field of thirteen went out for the four-furlong scramble, the Borough Handicap. Punters were in somewhat of a quandary what to pick, but eventually a favourite was found in Miss Winnie. There was a long delay in the rain at the start, this being largely caused by the vagaries of Black and Gold, who showed his usual aversion to the barrier. When eventually it went up, the first to begin were Black and Glod, Alba Rose and Miss Winnie, and before they had gone a furlong the Messrs. Duder’s horse was out in front. At the bend Miss Winnie appeared to be interfered with, and fell right back, while Discoverer and Takaro set out after the leader. A great race took place

all the way up the straight, Takaro getting up in time to win by a short half-length from Black and Gold, who was a length and a-hali in front of Discoverer, with Engraver, Mataura, and Noteorini finishing in that order. Next came the Summer Handicap, one mile, and of the ten runners Gladstone met with such solid support as to make him a warm favourite, with Delania next in request. Mr. O’Connor got them away to a capital start, Leonator immediately taking up the running, and past the stand he was showing in advance of Avalanche and Gladstone, with Geordie whipping in the field. Running down the back Nervine came with a long run on the outside, and at the bend he was out three lengths ahead of Akarana, while Cress was riding the favourite to hold his position. Once m a line for home Nervine faded out of the struggle, and Gladstone came through fast. Delania tried hard to hold him, but failed, Mr. Weal’s chestnut winning by a length from Delania, with Akarana third and Nervine fourth.

Ten turned out for the Third Pony Handicap, five furlongs, most money going on Etu and Frederick. It was a good start, but before they had gone far Frederick was in front, and he cleared right away from the field. At the bend he was six lengths ahead, the only two to seriously chase him being Merry Delaval and Sonoma. They managed to make Erickson draw his whip on the leader, but could never seriously threaten danger, the Soult gelding winning by two lengths, with Sonoma half a length further away, and nothing else within hail.

There were seven runners in the Devonport Handicap, six furlongs, most money being forthcoming for Hohoro and Certainty. Once again Mr. O’Connor got them away in a line, and they were bunched at the turn. Lady Clements shot away and led down the back from Miss Winnie, while Certainty dropped right away last. The leader faded away when the turn for home was made, and a battle royal occurred right up the straight, Noteorini, Lucrece, and Miss Winnie fighting it out to the bitter end. All these flashed past the post in a line, and nobody knew but the judge what had won till the numbers went up. That official’s verdict was: Noteorini by a nose from Lucrece, the pony being a nose in front of Miss Winnie.

Sol was made an even-money favourite for the Ponui Steeplechase, three miles, in which punters showed the soundness of their judgment. The field were together for over two miles, all four runners fencing most proficiently, while everyone had a turn at pacemaking. The last time round Sol and The Swimmer drew away from the other two, and at the bend it seemed a certainty for Sol. He ran out very wide at the home turn, and this let up The Swimmer. The latter, however, had not enough steam left to hold off Sol, who was soon straightened, and won very easily by four lengths, with Pierre six lengths further off third. Polycaste was a pronounced fancy for the concluding event, the Welter Handicap, one mile, with Franklin next in demand. Le Beau jumped away iu front, led the whole way, and won comfortably by three lengtns from the favourite, with Bully in third place. This brought a very pleasant meeting to a close.
