THE LAW IS A FOOL.

A sharp comment on the West Australian Licensing Act was made from the Kalgoorlie Police Court bench the other day, at the> close of a case of Sundaytrading, preferred against Patrick Quealy, a local publican. Defendant explained that the funeral of one of the members of his family took place on the day in question, and that after the funeral he asked the friends who had attended the funeral t.o have a drink- This apparently constituted the offence. The presiding magistrate (Dr. Kerney), after conferring with other justices on the Bench, said : “The case is dismissed, and it is considered that the law is a fool.

In Mataura the electoral roll reveals the fact that “Macs” of male and female persuasion have spread themselves out in considerable numbers in that part of the colony. The “Gore Standard” re J marks that “he and she are 650 strong, no fewer than 108 being “Macdonalds," “ McDonalds,” or “ MacDonalds.”

Travelling from Paeroa to Waihi one cannot but be struck with the inconvenient and awkward positions selected for the various railway stations en route. It was, perhaps, unavoidable to some extent, but it is the general opiu-; ion that more convenient places might have been chosen. The two hotels at Karangahake seem to be doing a thriving business. Mr Montgomery, of the Karangahake Hotel, makes every provision for commercials and others breaking their journey there. The Tramway Hotel, over the bridge, is also a favourite resort, where Mr P. Crosby is still to be found as host.

Since the opening of the Waihi railway the hotel trade in Paeroa has drifted down to the Paeroa Hotel, where Mr and Mrs Moriarty have made every provision for the comfort and convenience of the travelling public. Handy to the station, well-appointed, with everything clean, and an obliging and attentive staff, there is no doubt this hotel will hold its own.
