BOWLING.

(By

“The Skip.”)

In our issue of November 30th I had occasion to write somewhat strongly against the proposal of the Match Committee of the A.B.A. “ to grade the players in pennant matches as leaders, seconds, thirds, or skips for the whole season.” It will be remembered that almost to a man the bowlers were against the “ A and B” grad'ng system suggested at the adjourned meeting of the Auckland Bowling Association, and the introduction of a scheme by the Match Committee to grade players in one set position for a whole season came somewhat as a surprise. The matter was, however, referred to a full meeting of delegates, and it is pleasing to note that the attempt to bring about a grading scheme Las again been rejected.

The position now is almost identical with the scheme submitted the Mount Eden and Devonport Clubs. One team for every 12 playing members of a club will const tute the full representation of clubs competing. Clubs are permitted to change their players as often as they may deem fit.

The carrying out of. the • above scheme., will, I am sure, tend to an improvement in the playing strength of a club, and also assist in genial friendship and an advancement in bowling generally.

The inter-club competitions commence on Saturday, February 3rd.

The Auckland Bowling Association are particularly anxious for the country clubs to compete at the Easter tournament in Auckland. Singles, Doubles, and Champion Fours for the Association’s Shield will take place at the meeting. • * • *

I wish to remind bowlers of the notice that appeared in our issue of December 7th on the Te Aroha tournament, which takes place on January Ist and 2nd; also of the Whangarei Bowling Club’s tournament, on the same date.

In this issue we reproduce a photo, of Mr. Alfred . Bartlett, president of the Ponsonby Bowling Club. The club was formed in 1893, and was the second of its kind established in Auckland. Mr. Bartlett has served in many offices in connection with the club, and in 1901-2 was its secretary. He also donated four gold badges for competition in rink matches, and this to a great extent has assisted the club to place strong teams in the field for competitions. There are few presidents who are better appreciated and respected by their clubmates than is the subject of this sketch. Mr. Alf. Bartlett.

The officials opening of the Thame Bowling Club took place on Thursday last. The weather was anything but favourable, yet those who left Auckland to participate in the opening function were hospitably received and had a real royal time. Three rinks from the Remuera Club made the tr’p down, and defeated a like number of players of the mining township by 80 to 49. F. K. Reeves has been appointed delegate to N.B.A. Association, in place of L. Andrews, transferred from Wellington to Auckland by the United Fire Insurance Company. Little played a great game in the lead for Martin’s team. Davis, as third for the same team, played an excellent game. Garrett, a first-year player, put in sterling work for Young’s team in the fours at Mount Eden. A. W. Jones was a‘ tower of strength as third man for Rankin ‘n the same event. ♦** , * The skips—Young and Rankin—played up to their usual form, and the head was always in doubt until the last bowl was played. * w • President Nicholson fairly worried Renwick down in the Handicap Singles at the mountain green on Saturday, winning by 22 to 19. * Brookes, who has been playing somewhat loose lately, has begun to shake himself up a little, and is putting in steadier work. Rankin and Young tied in the fours at Mount Eden on Saturday, and in the play off the former team won by one point. 47 u. *

The teams skipped by Martin and Rankin play off for Mount Eden Club fours. • • • •

The game between the teams skipped by Young and Rankin for Mount Eden Club fours was worth going a long way to see. At the 7th head Rankin led by

8 to 5, at the 14th head Young led by 13 to 12, at the 17th head the score stood 15 all, and at the 19th and 21st heads they again were even. On the extra head being played Rankin’s team won the game by one po nt.

Miller, Coe, Surman, Walkei- were a strong quartette, and put up 29 to 17 against McStay, Culpan, Ferguson. Priestley.

My Whangarei correspondent writes: —Now that election matters are over we can settle down again to bowls. Since my last we have had a visiting team, who came up at show time. They consisted of Messrs. Barstow, Ranson, Harvey, and Geo. Court. Our people were handicapped as the visitors wanted to play in the morning, so a team was got together, but the visitors were too strong, and beat us by four points. The entries close for our tournament on Monday, the 18th. We will give the visiting teams a hearty welcome, and believe they can put in two good days. As regards the boats I will inform you later on as to the time-table.

My Mount Albert correspondent sends me the following : — In the club’s champion fours, played on Saturday afternoon, Mansell, Jamieson, Wright, Ashton (skip), 27, beat Impey, Page, Wilson, Harrison (skip), 19. A team skipped By Coombes, of the Auckland Club, beat President James’ by seven points. M. McLean’s team beat Parry’s 22 to 19. The last head was worth going a long way to see. Teams skipped by Garlick and Coombes had a close game; the former scored 18 against 17, and both sides showed good play. Coombes had two against him on the last head, and failed by an inch to rest the jack. In the champion fours match Mansell, as lead for Ashton, showed a great partiality for short heads, which he soon discovered the other side could not play, thus enabling his side to get a big lead. Jenk ns.was in good form, and put in some good work in the game between James and Coombes. He will make a fine player.

The following games were played on the Grey Lynn green on Saturday: — Club Championship.—R. Waite, 22, 22, v. R. Teague, 20, 19. This was a good go right from the jump, Teague playing a real good game. In the first game the scores on the 19th head were : Teague 20, Waite 18; then Waite drew a double on the next two heads, winning by two po’nts. Club Championship.—J. Burfoot, 17, 15, v. W. Casey, 16, 14. This also was a neck-and-neck go from the start, Bur--1 - Avuining both games by a point, and in each game it was a measure for shot. Club Fours.—G. Murray, Ferguson, W. Mills, W. Murray (skip), 23, v. C. Dickenson, W. Kerr, Dimery, V. Casey (skip), 13. Murray held too many guns for Vic. Casey in this game. In the course of the play he rung on two fives, and although Vic. played solid throughout he was unable to catch up. » * * « The Auckland Club have a dozen players willing to go to the Wellington tournament. ■sf * * * Tom Ussher is said to have a good chance in Ponsonby fours. * * * ♦ V. Langsford is playing a strong game as sk : p at Ponsonby. * * * * Arneil, of the same club, is a strong tip for the doubles. Easton had hard luck in not winning his heat in the Auckland Club fours. He just missed trailing the jack with a real good shot, which would have landed h'm the game. • * * • W. Lyons is said to be in great fettle and will be a strong help to Auckland at the tournament in Wellington. J. Carlaw is going to Wellington to do battle for Auckland at the tournameni The following trophy commpet’tions were played on the various greens: — Auckland Green.—Club Fours: Gorrie, Arnold, Oliphant, Ledingham (skip), 21, v.
