LINE & TRIGGER.

(By

“Gillie.”)

A good specimen of the rainbow trout, 29 inches in length and weighing 101 b, was on exhibition in Hamilton last Saturday.

A consignment of 10,000 Loch Leven trout has just been received by the Stratford Acclimatisation Society for their ponds. Fifty salmon have also been obtained by the same Society for experimental purposes.

The rivers throughout the Taranaki province should be admirably adapted for

trout and salmon. Most of them are clear, rapid flowing rivers, with shingly beds, and some very large fish are already known to exist in their waters.

The Waikato River has been too high for fishing purposes so far. Atiamuri,, which is considered one of the best places along the river, is barred to fishermen for the same reason. . >«’’

Nearly all the King Country rivers are in flood, but a few days of .fine weather will soon set matters to rights, when some splendid fishing waters will be avail* able. I

The Acclimatisation Society did record work this season in the distribution of fry. Abppt half a million were turned loose in the various streams and rivers, whilst a large number still retained in the ponds will be turned out as yearlings later on.

Mr. Fred Earl, the president of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society, who has just returned from a visit to Rotorua, reports that the fish are quite as numerous as last season, and apparently in better condition than they were at this time last year. All the anglers who were out on the first two days had caught fish, the best catches being made at the Ohau channel. No very large fish have been taken so far.

News from Okoroire shows that sport is fairly good on the Waihou River. Most of the fish in these waters are reported as bein somewhat on the small side, however.
