He is full brother to the excellent performer Cruciform, and has himself been successful when racing, winning the C.J.C. Champagne Stakes, the North Island Challenge Stakes (beating Advance), and other good races. Formosan has not yet any stock racing; whatever he has thrown are of great promise, and should be able to gallop. On looks and breeding there is no reason why he should not equal in success his close relation, Multiform. FINLAND, by Bill of Portland (son of St. Simon), from Fishwife (an excellent performer, and dam of Heretic), by King of the Anglers from Nameless, by Panic from Louise, by Peeping Tom (imp.) from Miss Looney (grand-dam of Melbourne and Adelaide), by Cossack from Hipped Bessy, by St. John from Bessy Bedlaim, by Rous Emigrant from Stella, by Peter Fine from Spaewife (imp.), Finland is a brown horse, foaled ip 1897. While racing he won the Mariby rnong Plate, Sires’ Produce Stakes, St. Leger, S.A.T.C. Goodwood Handicap (carrying 9st), second in Ascot Vale Stakes (beating Fides, Clean Sweep), second in Caulfield Guineas (beating Maltster, Hautboy (winner of October Stakes), and also in Caulfield Futurity Stakes (won after a close finish by Aureus 6.13), Finland carrying 9.1 in 1.29, and beating Maltster, George Frederick, United States.
