INTER-PROVINCIAL

(.FROM OUB UWM UOBKJifiFONDKNTS.) CANTERBURY. Christchckch, October 18. A further payment of 6sovs for the New Zealand Cup, ami acceptances for the Stewards’ Handicap, become due on Friday next at 9 p.m. A final payment of lOsovs for the New Zealand Cup is due on November 1. Mahutonga s weight for the Cup is now 9.2. There are very few inquiries here for Mahutonga for the Cup, all available money having been snapped up some time ago.

Ghoorka and Melodeon have perhaps been the two most consistently-backed horses for the Cup since the appearance of the weights. It is generally believed that the Lochiel horse will be the Porirua representative in the Cup. A large number of horses .have left for the Oamaru meeting this week. De la Rev, Canticle, Hilarity, Royal Crown, Stepaside, Mango, Matuku, Ability. Makaroff, Somaroff, Lady Lyonors, King’s Guest, Tessera, Vardo, St. Michael. Orkan, Grosvenor, Czafevina, and Bluestone made up the contingent. Several Canterbury horses will be running at the Wellington meeting this week. Signalman will run m the Wellington Handicap. Cannie Chiel, Kirriemuire, Taxpayer, Veneer, Clanburn, Blythemaid, Graduated Tax, Knastikoff, Lvanoff, Pas Seul complete the local contingent.

Golden Knight (Hewitt) easily defeated Calibre (Raymond) in a gallop over a mile and a-half last Thursday morning. The pace was solid from the start, but at the finish Golden Knight had his companion in trouble, and beat him easily in 2min 42 l-ssec. The gallop was the best of the morning, and proved that there is not anything seriously wrong with Golden Knight. Sir G. Clifford’s Cup horse Quarryman is putting in some fine work on the tracks, and is, I think, capable of beating any of his stable mates, including Signalman, who has left for Wellington, over a mile and a-half course. If Signalman shows up prominently in the Wellington Handicap, Quarryman’s prospects in the Cup will bear a particularly rosy aspect.

Leeside, Speculate, and Noxious Weeds have been jumping over hurdles lately, and are doing good work all round. The Bill of Portland filly To-morrow, a Welcome Stakes winner, who is in the Stewards’ Handicap at 6.10, lias been putting in some smart gallops lately.
