TROTTING.

OTAHUHU TROTTING CLUB’S SUMMER MEETINGFIRST DAY. On Saturday the Otahuhu Trotting Club made a start with their summer campaign. Although the weather was beautifully fine, the strong courtier attraction of the band contest in the Domain (which attracted 2(,000 people) mitigated against a large attendance, but, although there was a slight falling off in the numbers present, there was Bone in the quality of the sport or in the interest shown, while speculation proved brisk, the sum of £2472 going through the totalisator during the day. Mr Lusk was in the judge’s box, Mr O’Connor acted as starter, Mr Massey held the watch, while Mr Yonge, the energetic secretary, kept things going smoothly. The four made a strong quartette, and their presence was a guarantee that the respective duties would ce efficiently attended to. The day’s business opened with the Maiden Trot, 1-j miles, for which Albertorious was sorted out as something very choice, and so it proved, for the son of Albert Victor had the race won a long way from home, crossing the line a dozen yards ahead of V.S., who was a complete outsider. Miss Dunmore was a moderate third. Another red-hot favourite in General Election won the Sylvia Park Trot, miles. He was opposed by eight others, but led all the way artd came home nearly fifteen yards ahead of Donnizetti, with Little Faul a good third. The Otahuhu Pony Cup, 64 furlongs, gave rise to a good race. Fashionable and Orange and Blue were the fancy picks, and the latter hopped off just ahead of Lucrece. After making matters very willing for six furlongs she died away, and Lucrece running home under the whip lasted long enough to beat Gladys Rose by half a length, with Fashionable two lengths away, third. The Otahuhu Trotting Cup, two miles, was the big event of the day, antd for it there were eight starters. Of these Duke C. was a slightly better favourite than Legbreak. The race was really a gift for the latter, for she was in front throughout, and never being troubled, won without much effort by 30' yards from Miss Huon, with Duke C. in third place. Once again punters picked it in one in the Pony Trot, 14 miles, there being a regular rush for Kidney Pai, who went to the post a warm favourite. She was responsible for the whole of the running, winning by tert yards from Victor C., who but for a break at a critical moment might nearly have won. Cleveland’s Pride was a fair third. The Electric Trot, one mile, brought out eleven competitors, Bert and The Mooress being the most fancied, a strong proof that punters had correctly sized up the situation, as the pail finished in that order, Bert winning by a

yard, while Donnizetti occupied third berth. ~ . With only four runners in the Flying Stakes, 5 furlongs, punters had no hesitation in selecting Solitary as the right pea, another accurate forecast, for she led all the way and won rather easily from Lucrece and Inspiration. The concluding event was the Class Trot, 1| miles, eleven going to the post. Lady Love was made a pronounced favourite, but for once backers were slightlv astray in their calculations, the winner turning up in the Heiress, who was in front all the way, and won by four yards from the favourite who trotted well but just failed to get up in time- Juliette was a good third.
