CANTERBURY.

Christchurch, January 31. Convoy came down from Wellington on Wednesday last and was at once tak< n on to his new owner’s place, at Oamaru. Beau Seaton, who was recently purchased by Mr Buckley, joined Convoy, and the pair are likely starters at the Canterbury Autumn Meeting. There are only four acceptors for the Canterbury Midsummer Handicap, Connie Chiel Sst 111 b, Stepdancer 7st 131 b, Delarey 7st lolb, and Sea Lion 7st 51b. In the same race last year Delaray beat Cannie Chiel by half-a-head, but this year Stepdancer may manage to beat the pair. Sea Lion over-reached himself while doing a mile and a-quarter gallop in company with Tirole on Thursday last, and was slightly lame for a couple of days. He appears to be all right again, but does not seem quite forward enough for a hard race. Master Alix is looking well after his treble victory at Wellington; he is engaged in the Craven Plate and Flying Handicap at Riccarton next week. The much-talked-of Uranus is in one of the Welter Handicaps to be run next week, and many people are anxious to see the son of Castor make his debut in public. There are three hurdle races on the programmes of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s Autumn Meeting, and five horses, Slow Tom, Zealous, Wonderful, Roller, and Force have been nominated for each race. Magnificent has been entered for the two open hurdle races at Waneanui. Sir Geo. Clifford generally patronises the Wanganui fixture. For the Autumn Meeting he has nominated Quarryman, Lady Wayward, Stronghold, Golden Vein, Signalman, and Chryseis. Mr Stead’s entries for the same meeting include Savoury, Machine Gun, and Noctuiform. Tt is reported that an offer of 700 guineas was made for Master Alix after he won his races at Wellington. •Nominations for the minor handicaps at the Canterbury Midsummer Meeting are only fair, and fields promise to be smaller than in previous years
