AFTER THE RACES.

AUCKLAND RACING CLUB’S SUMMER MEETING-

SECOND DAY.

Although the weather promised very badly on Thursday for the continuation of the A.R.C. Summer Meeting yet it cleared up early and but for a high southerly wind was pleasant enough. The sport was interesting, but was chiefly remarkable for the constant downfall of the favourites, and punters must have had a very bad day. The sum of £13,599 was put through the totalizator, an advance of £1278 on the corresponding day last year. The Alexandra Handicap was the opening item, and backers got their first set back, Golden Vein going to the post a warm favourite, but he was never prominent and finished last. Avalanche made most of the running, but at the Derby Stand she was caught by Beau Seaton, who ran home nearly two lengths ahead of Waipuna, with Avalanche third. Bellman was a rather warm favourite for the Ponsonby Hurdles, punters remembering his easy win on Monday. He proved good enough to beat all that had opposed him then, but a newcomer at the hurdle business in Dolores had much more foot than the chestnut on the flat, and although she made one or two faulty jumps it was a case of no race ’’ at the finish, for the black mare cantered in by herself with Loch Lomond two lengths behind Bellman. With only four runners in the Criterion Handicap punters considered it a real good thing for Apologue, although Carl Rosa had admirers. It was an error of judgment, however, for after Carl Rosa and Foremost had made the running together to the distance the latter drew out and won by two lengths, while the favourite, who finished gamely enough, was three lengths behind Carl Rosa. Putty was the sole absentee from the big event, the Summer Cup, in which punters were in something of a quandary what to back, nearly everything in the race having admirers. Romeo, however, carried most weight of metal, with Quarryman next in demand. Ihe race was a rather interesting one, for after Ailsa and Marshal Soult had carried on the running; for a mile the field closed up. With heads turned for home Jones took Gladstone to the front, and the chestnut answering the call in much the better fashion than usual lasted long enough to stall off a late challenge by Strathavon, who would have just about won had he been ridden with more judgment. Ghoorka was a poor third, Quarryman being fourth, and Heroism fifth. Undismayed by the constant defeat of the favourite backers rallied strongly and came for Bowman and Paritutu,. ridden respectively by Hewitt and Jenkins, but once again they got a set back. Bowman made most of the running, with Muthema close handy. At the home turn the field closed up and the flails were out on all. Lady Hune finishing on the rails showed most speed, however, winning rather comfortably at the end by two lengths from Numa, with Bowman a similar distance further away third. Reduction and Girton Girl were backed for a heap of money in the Pony Handicap, with Manoeuvre next in demand. Forth, however, upset the pot by leading all the way and winning by two lengths from Reduction, who just beat Girton Girl in the last little bit. After six consecutive facers punters at, last found something fairly choice in the Visitors’ Plate, this being the Multiform colt Multifid. There were nine runners, and of these the first off the mark was Crichton, but when they had gone a, furlong the favourite passed Hewitt’s mount and led into the straight. From this point it was all over bar shouting, for Multifid came right away and won by four lengths from Kilderkin, who was two lengths ahead of Crichton. With but five runners in the Waitemata Handicap backers selected King Paul as the best of a poor lot chiefly because he had the services of Hewitt. He made the running for a mile and a-quarter, when St. Harp and Needlework closed up, and the latter staying on at the end won by a length. DERBY BAY. It cannot be said that the weather conditions were incapable of improvement for the third day of the A.R.C. Summer Meeting. A cold and boisterous southwesterly wind blew all the .afternoon, while every now and again driving rain squalls made matters very uncomfortable. Under the circumstances the attendance was surprisingly good, His Excellency the Governor and party being among the early arrivals. It was only to be expected that the totalizator business would show a drop and this occurred. £18,454 going through the machine,

which is £1073 less than on the corresponding day last year. Proceedings started with the Glasgow Handicap, seven furlongs, for which a nice field of thirteen went out. Punters dropped on Golden Vein, Waipuna, and Lady Annie as the best treated. The start was a straggling one, Golden Vein being left several lengths. The Middy immediately took up the running, and he led down the back from Lady Annie. Nearing the bend Numa joined issue, he and The Middy being three lengths ahead of the field as the straight was entered. Crichton and Beau Seaton made a big effort to overhaul them, but although they settled Numa The Middy won by nearly two lengths from the Dunedin colt, with Beau Seaton close up third. With Dolores simply thrown into the New Year’s Hurdle Race, two miles, it was easily apparent what would be favourite and punters came open-mouthed at the black mare. Lingard made the running for a round with the favourite close handy, and then Wilson took her to the front. At the back Catherine Gordon closed up and, the favourite making a faulty jump, for a moment showed in front. Dolores was soon alongside the Southerner, however, and drew away in the straight, winning without an effort by eight lengths from Spalpeen, Catherine Gordon having lost her rider at the first jump. There was a great finish between the rest for third place, Princess of Thule getting it by a head. Next came the race for the Blue Ribbon of the turf in the North, the Thirty-first G.N. Derby, one and a-half miles. Nightfall, who was coupled with Savoury, was made a hot favourite, but there were plenty of staunch admirers for the one local candidate, Gladstone. After some delay Mr O’Connor got them away to a good start, and after going a short distance Boris took up the running from Savoury and Gladstone. This was the order past the stand, at which point Signalman was whipping in the field. Down

the back straight Nightfall went up to the leader and they ran ihrougn the cutting together, with Gladstone slowly edging up to them. Nearing the straight it could be easily seen that the baldhurst crack was not to have matters all her own way for Gladstone and Boris were level with her. At this point Hewitt came off, however, and the race was spoilt. Gladstone finished strongly, winning by three lengths irom Boris, who beat Savoury by nearly two lengths. Nightfall, riderless, finished fourth, while Signalman was eased up. The winner was afterwards decorated with the blue ribbon by Lady Plunkett. Backers got something of a facer in the Midsummer Handicap, five furlongs, for which they came at Multifid and Boomerang. Boomerang jumped off his mark very smartly and he led to the bend closely attended by Carl Rosa and Goremost. Once heads were turned for home Carl Rosa caught Boomerang and running straight home under the whip won all out by a length and a-half from Multifid, who had a bad run yet beat Boomerang by a length, with Foremost a close fourth. Ten runners turned out for the County Handicap, and of these Ailsa and Kremlin were most favoured of backers. A very fair start was effected, Ailsa and Kremlin immediately taking up the running from a well-bunched field, <>f which about the last was Black and Gold. The same pair were in front as they turned into the straight, but here Jones brought General Average with a well-sustained run, and the Hotchkiss colt and Kremlin drew right out from the field. The former lasted long enough to win by over a length from Kremlin, with Beau Seaton, whose name was not on the card, a poor third. To-morrow lost her rider and cantered in last. The A.R.C. Handicap, one and a-half

miles, brought out ten runners, Romeo being the only malcontent. Scotty, Mahutonga, and Strathavon were the best backed, Scotty having one ticket more invested on him than the Cup winner. After a rather tedious wait a good start was effected, Scotty immediately taking up the running from Strathavon, while Heroism was left several lengths. This was the order down the back, where Quarry man supplanted the favourite and Starshoot went up nearer the leaders. At the turn for home Scotty and Quarryman were still fighting out the battle for supremacy, but the Aucklander had the best of the deal and coming away in the last little bit won by three lengths from Quarryman, who was four lengths in front of Mahutonga and Strathavon. There was no pronounced favourite in the Pony Handicap, six furlongs, but Reduction and Girton Girl had a few more tickets on them than the others. The latter mare jumped away in front, but after going a furlong Forth shot past and led the way into the straight. At the distance Lucrece drew up to him and looked a certain winner, but in the last fifty yards Hewitt brought Reduction with a great rush, the Southern mare getting up in time to win by half a head from Lucrece, with Sally Horner nearly two lengths away third. The Maiden Handicap, one and a-quar-ter miles, was the concluding item and for this King Paul was considered the best of a moderate lot. Noteorini made play for the bulk of the journey, and he was still in command as the straight was reached. At the distance Dunmore came at him and finishing in much better style than was the case on Thursday, won by three lengths from King Paul, who was a similar distance in advance of Noteorini. ’ CONCLUDING DAY. The big Summer Carnival was brought to a close on Tuesday, under weather

conditions very similar to those which prevailed on the previous day, although the showers were less frequent. The attendance was large, His Excellency the Governor and party again being present. Speculation was fairly brisk, but owing to there being but two starters competing in the Plate, the figures, £15,470, show a falling off on those of the corresponding day last year. The total sum handled at the meeting was £68,420, aS against £69,846 put through at the previous summer gathering. There were twelve starters for the Goodwood Handicap, one mile, for which Avalanche and Waipuna were in most demand. Numa and Muthema made the running down the back, but near the straight Avalanche went to the front, and looked like winning easily, but the pony tired perceptibly, and had to be shaken up to beat Bonomiana, who was the outsider of the entire lot, by a neck, with Waipuna not more than a head away, third. Although but a quartette turned out for the Sylvia Handicap, six furlongs, the race was a most exciting one. Boomerang was made favourite, and. he jumped away in front, an!d attended by Czarevna led to the home bend, where Foremost went up alongside. These two turned into the straight together, and a great tussle took place right up the straight. A hundred yards from home Boomerang drew out and won by three-quarters of a length, with Kilderkin three lengths off, third. Scotty and Savoury were the best backed pair in the Grandstand Handicap, LV miles. After Putty had bolted round the course, and Starshoot had further delayed matters by trying to kick the starter, the field were got away on fairly even terms, Paratutu and Quarryman immediately going to

the front. Down the back Quarry man was leading Starshoot by a length, a bunch following with Putty in the rear. Quarry man came into - the straight over

a length in front of Starshoot and Jewellery, but neither had a chance of catching him. Scotty came out at the distance in pursuit, but failed to catch

the leader by over a length, while Starshoot once again filled third place, Savoury being fourth, and Marshal Soult fifth. The presence of Mr Stead’s pair, Sungod and Noctuiform, ih the Tenth Royal Stakes had the effect of frightening, most of the others out, Boris and Multifid alone being found willing to take on the redoubtable Yaldhurst pair, Sungod being made a hot favourite. The race was a very pretty one, Noctuiform making the running from Multifid all the way, and having enough steam left to stall off Mr O’Brien’s colt at the finish. Boris and Sungod ran .stride and stride together all the way, and the judge was unable to separate them at the finish.

The Steeplechase, 34 miles, gave rise to an exceedingly fine race. Princess of Thule and Up-to-Date were the popular selection, a rather correct forecast. Bellman made most of the running, but lost a lot of ground through Walsh mistaking the course, while Hinau fell the first round. At the top of the hill the last time, the field all closed up, and a great fight took place between the two favourites, but Up-to-Date, showing a little more pace, won all out by two lengths, while Loch Lomond was a poor third.

A nice field of fourteen went to the post for the Newmarket Handicap, six furlongs, Golden Vein being the most fancied. The start was a goed one, The Middy soon showing in advance of Strathavon, with a big bunch following. The same pair were still in the lead when heads were turned for home, and a great race took place between them. Strathavon, staying best and running a very different horse to what he did on the previous day, won by over a length, with Golden Vein two lengths off third, Black and Gold being last. Mahutonga and Gladstone were the sole contestants for the Auckland Plate, 14 miles, and punters were in a quandary as to which was the right one to back at weight-for-age, the Auckland Cup winner, or the hero of the Summer Cup and Derby. Fielders freely offered to take 5 to 4 about either, but eventually Mahutonga was made a little better favourite than his younger rival. The race w r as not a particularly good one, for Mahutonga led all the way and won without any apparent effort by nearly three.lengths. The great carnival was concluded with the Pony Handicap, for which thirteen went to the post, the winner turning up in a comparative outsider in Inspiration, who led all the way and won by three lengths from Rapid, 'who was two lengths in advance of Girton Girl. The particulars of the three davs’ racing were as follows SECOND DAY. THE ALEXANDRA HANDICAP, of 150 sovs. Seven furlongs.
